Yeah but you've pretty much listed only customer service work, it's doesn't matter if it's burgers or vegetables. Non customer facing roles in Supermarkets will be very few and far between.

Customer facing roles are not the prerogative of retail, not by far. Receptionists, hotel staff, nhs workers from top to bottom, canteen staff, police, teachers...

Dealing with the public isn't easy - but it's far easier if you are professional about it and stay pleasant and impartial. There will always be a psycho, (even in a primary school!) but if you resent it and hate the public that much - then you have a choice.

btw - quite a few people have commented along the lines of 'what to expect on minimum wage' - do tesco pay only the minimum? There have been threads about their wages and some quoted are definitely above that.

because maybe she needs a job

I worked in retail for 12 years, i walked out as i decided that being threatened with a needle that they told me contained blood infected with HIV because i was "looking at him funny", kinda overstepped the boundaries of the customer always being right!

Three years down the line, im still working in temp jobs because where i live there are no jobs other than retail or call centres.

    That's not a customer,that's a criminal.
I have heard that is not uncommon in retail, but not normally brandished at someone for absolutely no reason. Not disbelieving you,but that is very unusual.

How are collecting the bins these days.

Actually Mr Grannybiker has emptied bins and swept the streets! When our children were young, engineering was in recession and skilled welders all across town were being laid off. It paid our mortgage and other bills meaning he could support our family and didn't need to claim benefits.
Although minimum wage legislation wasn't in existence then, his wage from the council was would have been at this level.
House prices had just crashed leaving many with negative equity so moving wasn't an option, even if welding jobs elsewhere were easy to find.
My question, I suppose, is does "Emptying bins," make one an inferior human being?
Worse things will have happened in the world today...

Tesco pay £6.94 basic plus premiums dependant on what hours/department you work on, Top General assistants can be on as much as £11.20 an hour

Is this the tone you used with your customers?
I'm sorry to say, from being threatend constantly and threats towards my girlfriend I had to develope a "Withdrawn cant be assed" attitude, otherwise I would have been commited along time ago, this is where you get the staff get the attitudes from, I've even witnessed an old dear hit someone with their walking stick because tesco woudln't take her cheque. I work with a fella (who is also leaving for the railways) who was what you call a rare bread within tesco, If a customer was all "eh arr mate" he could quickly build a rappour with that customer and if the customer seemed to like formal more, he could do all the sir madam etc. SOMEONE EVEN THREATEND HIM FOR BEING POLITE, so us retail staff cannot win can we?

    What about the warehouse/factory option?

Tend to be located near many urban areas. They might live in a more rural area with only small towns and villages.

Thats what I was saying. The other jobs uktyler listed all faced the public in one form or another. Warehouse/factory work will depend on location.

Supermarkets employ shelf stackers, thats not a customer facing position.

I use to work in retail. They don't clear the customers out of the shop just so you can fill up!

Tim, I may have missed this over the last few months, but what was your job/jobs?

Varied. From sales assistant during education in the late 90's then to an assistant manager position (also covered a store as store manager for 9 months). I later reduced my hours as I was staring my own Internet business which had become successful. I have since left retail and persue my Internet business on a full time basis.
  • i went to a big tesco on saturday at milton keynes, the lady at ciustomer service whoo served me was really nice. we bought some batteries on offer which didn't show on receipt. there were no rudeness and she was really chatty so I guess it depends who you get and what they have just been put through as I've seen some customers being quite unpleasantly rude. Mind you I have had some terrible customer service from the bedford tescos so it seems to e hit and miss.
Overall I find Sainsburys much friendlier overall, but my cats preferthe tesco cat food so go there as well!
