The staff are paid to be there, customers are paying to be there, surely that should make a difference to their attitude?

So rudeness is fine if you're paying for something?

I don't think money should influence manners.

No, he's not saying that. He is pointing out that in the customer/staff relationship it is the customer who is there to be helped/served - and with good grace.

Whilst I take your point that some people are just going to be rude whatever you do - I've found that on the whole you reap what you sow.

You're letting your hatred of the public show here, tim, surely, if everyone was as bad as you consistently make out when you worked in retail, maybe it was a two way thing? ;):D

You're just assuming things. Again, I've never used the words "majority" "all" etc etc. I constantly have pointed out when I've quoted proportions that I'd say it's about 0.5% maybe 1% of people who I found rude.

    As you say....

So thats probably that 0.5/1% rather than it being anything to do with me!

If it is a two way thing you'd also find me complaining on here about staff all the time then as well wouldn't you.;)

I'm sure the same percentage of shop workers are as rude, perhaps this is the national rude person percentage.

However shop workers are paid to be there, and paid to be polite, even if they only get minimum wage for it.

But then most are. With the turnover in retail, a tendency for staff to be doing the job as funds for education or some other temporary reason then your always going to get one or two who won't be that good.

I would say with the reason that staff are doing a job the proportion of rude staff will always be much less than the public, there is no motivation for the public not to be rude apart from their own standards of behavior they set themselves. From previously working in retail this is quiet evident and some of the other posts on this thread comfirm this.

Im sorry to say 9 out of 10 people who come into the branch of tesco where I work at, I was explaining to a mother that I can't allow her child to fuel (actually operate the pump) as it was against Health and Safety policies, Tesco's own policies and local laws, I had to ask for the child to remain in the car (again a local by-law during fueling) The customer turned round and hurled abuse at me, saying no one cares for her child more than her, during this time, her daughter ran out infront of a dotcom van.

Its customers like this who make staff not want to help anyone and not be polite etc, We have "tesco core values" to follow, but shouldn't customers treat us as they expect to be treated

Are you really saying only 10% of the customers in Tesco's treat you rudely?

I am not condoning the behaviour of the customer you mentioned, but 90% of your customers are rude? I find that hard to believe.
  • :o:o life would be so much nicer if everyone was nice and polite to each other:o :o

If one or two customers are nice then I feel lucky, Customers either look down on us or treat us like sh*t Ive even had one customer launch a punch at me because he spent £49.77 and wanted 5 pence off every litre of petrol because he didn't have the coupon I couldn't give it, and I have been threatend on numerous occassions for many things.

Ive had one come in and threatend me with the police because he lost his wallet and accussed me of stealing it.

So yeah, I work in retail, I know what its like.
