What if they live in an area with few other employers?
Are there any areas with only supermarkets as employers?
Somehow I doubt it. Work in MacDonalds flipping burgers, hotel room cleaners, sign up for temp agencies and work in the supermarket in a non customer facing role.
Retail is not the only employment option in this country today.0 -
I worked at Asda because it was a new store opening & I thought being as i'd been out of work for about four years & had a long term illness they might give me a chance. I loved the people I worked with, the company wasn't bad & it was close to home, plus interviews terrify me so I didn't want to change jobs & it was security for me.
Anyways, most customers were lovely but some were terrible, even the other day in Somerfield a guy was threatening & yelling at a woman with Down's Syndrome, I don't know why but he was very aggressive & security did nothing. At Asda our GSM (Top Manager) was threatened with a needle, the guy on the door was punched (Customer got a £10 gift card for his 'inconvenience') desite it being on CCTV. And omg it annoyed me how many parents used to slap their kids for getting lost in the store, I understand worry but !!!!!!!!!!!!
End of the day, we're hired on personality not qualifications & we don't want to (Or most of us don't) upset customers. We just want to get on, do our job & go home! The only thing I did see (And annoys me) when there was colleagues talking to each other in front of customers which isn't on unless essential (In which case i'd apologise & explain).
Anyways, it's not all one or the other, both have their moments but yes, *some* customers were very aggressive & unreasonable.0 -
Low end paid jobs tend not to be picky, unless you have experience then in the manufacturing sector they aint that picky
Low end jobs don't tend to be picky no, neither is retail. If you work in a shop you could work in a kitchen, hotel or warehouse.
People choose to work in retail, there are other jobs out there.
I can't understand people who carry on working in jobs they don't like, if you don't like it do something else.0 -

Yeah but you've pretty much listed only customer service work, it's doesn't matter if it's burgers or vegetables. Non customer facing roles in Supermarkets will be very few and far between.0 -

What about the warehouse/factory option?
There are plenty of jobs in the service industry that are not customer facing.
Supermarkets employ shelf stackers, thats not a customer facing position.
All I'm saying is that if you don't like your job, or think 90% of the people you deal with on a day to day basis are rude to you, then change your job.0 -
So the ONLY job you could find was in a supermarket?
I find that hard to believe.
In my Local area the only jobs available are in Tesco, Marks and Spencers, Morrisons or independant shops. The few accountants that are around here want full time staff and experience.
So yes they are the ONLY jobs?
How are collecting the bins these days.0 -

Is this the tone you used with your customers?
You have just proved why so many people were rude to you.
I don't collect bins, in fact I'm about to retire at 40, thank you.
Are you seriously telling me the only jobs local to you are supermarkets or accountants?
Where do you live?0
