You haven't lost a grand, it wasn't yours to start with.

A few days ago I rang my bank and asked to take out £4000. They told me to come in yesterday. I wasn't paying attention to the cashier counting out £4000, when she finished she put the money in the envelopes and gave them to me. Soon as I left the bank I handed the money over to somebody who I owed without opening the envelope as I assumed it had £4000 in there. However, later on in the day I received phone calls on my house number and mobile number and a letter through the post personally dropped by the cashier, they said that I was actually given an extra £1000 and they are asking for it back. I'm not sure whether they did as I wasn't paying much attention as the cashier was counting the money. But they say they have video evidence that she accidently gave me an extra £1000. What do I do? I can't get through to the person I gave the money to because his mobile is switched off and I do not know where he lives. I owed him money from a car I bought. The bank said that if I cannot get the money by 5pm the evening then they will inform the police. Can they do this? Will I be in trouble? It's not my fault, its the cashiers.

Hello, you said 'you' handed over the money as soon as you left the bank. Then maybe there was a camera in the high street recording this....? If so,use that in your defence.

The bank has video footage suggesting they gave you 5000. Who's to say the cashier didn't have a doctored bundle. Except the bank and the cashier.

You asked for £4000. You signed a chit for 4000. You got 4000. (as far as you know).

If they can't prosecute celebs for taking drugs from video footage you can't be prosecuted for having had too much money from video footage. That's not cocaine, and those aren't £1000 bundles.

The bank might close your account but I don't see they have a leg to stand on for taking any money off you. ( that would be theft)

They are more likely to sack the cashier and the manager. When I used to handle large sums of money I/the bank I worked for would double check. Even just visual double checks. i.e. That's £4000, why are there 5 piles? its a simple procedure designed to stop this kind of mistake.

Stick to your guns but separately see if you can get the cash back. Once you have the cash back, stick it in another account and get some interest until the mater is resolved.

The manager probably hasn't told his bosses yet and is trying to get the cash back without admitting the error.

To over count by a grand is negligent at the least.

I find it hard to believe the cashier came round to your house - surely that is misuse of the information they hold. If this has happened surely the bank would need to follow a set procedure, such as the branch manager writing to you by recorded delivery.

I suspect that the cashier won't be a cashier for much longer and will soon be posting on the jobseeking board.

and a letter through the post personally dropped by the cashier,

Oh purleeeeeeeeees! Pull the other 1, it's got bells on.

Surely banks have strict procedures to follow in instances like this (assuming that the OP is actually telling the truth and not winding ppl up). I'd have found it more believeable if you had said that you recieved a letter by recorded delivery from the Bank Manager as well lol.

NO cashier would do that... they ALWAYS count it as they hand it over... even if its small change coins!

Not true; I withdrew £4000 in cash recently and it was given to me in four sealed envelopes.

yes the bank said they have video footage of the cashier giving me 5000. The cashier didn't confirm how much she put in. She just put it into the envelopes. The manager rang me and wanted the money back, and I exlpained the situation to him. I think they might involve the police, but I cannot trace the other guy back.
u said in this post the manager rang u, now u r saying the cashier rang u?
u also state in op they would call police if not returned by 5pm now u r saying u think they might call police? xxxx
