Cashier gave me extra £1000

  • Did you hear about the haddock that married a cod and they had baby sprats? Well, that story wasn't as fishy as this one.

Yes, customers do have to return the money when cashpoint machines are incorrectly filled. However, banks may waive the requirement to avoid bad publicity.

  • Something definitely smells fishy here. A cashier could conceivably screw up and give you an extra £20 or so, but a grand is a huge stack of notes and very noticeable, and would probably be given out in bundles of £1000. It was part of my basic training that I should count money out to myself first and then to the customer to reduce the likelihood of errors - something's very wrong if that didn't happen.

If this is a real error, you will have to give back the money, or they'll probably just debit your account to cover it. However, I would definitely talk to the manager, because I can't think of any conceivable way that a competent cashier - OK, fully sighted cashier, even - could hand out and extra thousand quid just like that.

A few days ago I rang my bank and asked to take out £4000. They told me to come in yesterday. I wasn't paying attention to the cashier counting out £4000, when she finished she put the money in the envelopes and gave them to me. Soon as I left the bank I handed the money over to somebody who I owed without opening the envelope as I assumed it had £4000 in there. However, later on in the day I received phone calls on my house number and mobile number and a letter through the post personally dropped by the cashier, they said that I was actually given an extra £1000 and they are asking for it back. I'm not sure whether they did as I wasn't paying much attention as the cashier was counting the money. But they say they have video evidence that she accidently gave me an extra £1000. What do I do? I can't get through to the person I gave the money to because his mobile is switched off and I do not know where he lives. I owed him money from a car I bought. The bank said that if I cannot get the money by 5pm the evening then they will inform the police. Can they do this? Will I be in trouble? It's not my fault, its the cashiers.

It's the cashier's fault, but it's your fault too.

Why didn't you count it before you left the bank ?

Why didn't you count it before you gave it to the person you owed money too ?

You were very silly not to check the money before leaving and wreckless not to check it before giving it to the other person.

I don't know how good their CCTV is, so not sure if that helps their case much, but it might do.

You need to get through to the guy who has your extra £1000 and fast.

No, I was just referring to your natural care over matters pecuniary.

I wasn't referring to your penchant for eating boiled road kill, the fact that you wear funny clothes at any opportunity, or seem to have an aversion to the old "Life Buoy" - none of those things at all , just how careful you guys are with money, and how that is to be applauded.

    Thanks again.

But just so others don't take offence, I'll point out the obvious:
    1. Haggis are native to our rugged hillsides and don't venture near roads.
    2. By funny clothes I'm guessing you mean traditional kilts and highland wear? Some prefer pearly queen and morris dancing outfits - takes all sorts I guess. What I can say is that there's never any shortage of positive attention whenever I've worn my kilt out of an evening. Would agree with you that it's not the kilt that counts, it's what you put in it ;)
    3. Life Buoy soap was first developed by Lever Brothers in 1894. I'm led to believe it hasn't been on sale since 2002. I've never tried it myself, but I think it's supposed to have been cheap and nasty. But if you go to a supermarket you'll see there's lots of newer brands. What I can recommend in total seriousness is any of the products from Arran Aromatics (http://www.arranaromatics.com/index_ie.asp) you'll find their products in the best hotels and maybe some of the more up market outlets. Treat yourself, you won't regret it.

If we can be of further assistance, don't hesitate to ask. :)

  • If you have the money, give it back.

I've worked in a bank where 5 grand went missing and despite knowing where it had gone (to a customer by accident) we still had to follow procedure which is extremely tedious and also unpleasant. Each and every staff member being treated as a suspect, personal belongings searched like you're back at primary school, internal auditors asking questions.
Someone's job may be on the line. Counting money all day is not fun and mistakes do happen.
