Possible 5p-10p/litre petrol discount

I thought that various petrol grades were defined by a British Standard number (BS number on the front of the pumps). Without knowing the exact contents of the BS documents themselves I would have thought that these would specify the exact composition of the petrol. If it has some additional cheap liquid added to it then surely it can't comply with the BS number.
However, I do wonder how accurately petrol pumps are calibrated, and whether we are sometimes getting less petrol (or more) than the gauge shows. Or indeed how easy it would be for a unscrupulous owner to fiddle with the calibration so that we would be over-charged. It would be a good subject for investigation by Watchdog but I've never got around to suggesting it to them.0 -

This is a far more plausible explanation than thinking that there is a difference between the fuels. I reported a faulty pump to Cambridge Trading Standards - it claimed to have filled my tank with more petrol than it would hold! During my communications with them, they told me that the supermarkets tend to calibrate their pumps more often to keep them dispensing the minimum amount of fuel above the amount indicated - i.e legal but close to the line.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -
good point, perhaps there is a difference between tesco and Essos accuracy/calibration...

Its funny, I mentioned about this site on 8 November and people were very sceptical about it and to be honest, didn't appear to be interested.

I've just had the email and signed up for this. I can't see the harm of a few more bits of spam if it isn't on the up & up, if it is then great stuff and more power to his elbow! This really is the might of the consumers clubbing together to hammer out a sweet discount for us.
I've passed this idea onto my work colleagues and hopefully the little ripples will spread far and wide and loads of people will register with the site.
*fingers crossed that he gets enough people on board*Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out0 -
