as the title says went to aldi at the weekend i found it to be expensive [i buy a lot of asdas value range !] and disorganised.i bet if you went to any supermarket and tried their value lines you would save money and still get quality items !
try the cerials, sausages, and the 69p five a day deals on fruit,
musli i would swear is rebagged alpen, alpen being the only musli i have ever been able to stomach. but i get something just as good for around a quid a kilo. oatbran flakes, cluster etc, and all for a quid a box, i can fault them, all their cerials seem more on a par with the big brand names, alot more than asda's do.
a kilo of grapes for 69p none of the supermarkets come anywhere near close to matching that, for the 69p price its more than a bargain to just go into aldi and stock up on the 5 a day offers on the fruit and veg.
kiwis are back on at 69p, think its either 6 or 8 in a pack.
the sausages the missis gets from aldi cost less than a quid, and have less fat running out into the grill pan than any sausage ive had from asda.
now dont get me wrong, as with any sausage, the contents are probably a little dubious, but ateast you get to eat more or less the what was put in the grill, and not something half the size once all the fat has run out.
we dont get much from aldi we just pick and choose, what we get is always better on price, and the quality is very good for the money easily as good as big brand name items,
some of asdas smartprice is absolute rubbish, how they can make something taste so sweet and look like a buiscut and not a sugar cube is surely a mirracle of modern science.:rotfl: we get quite a bit of smart price stuff, but i always feel that its low price poor quality and choose to put up with that for the sake of budgeting, eat to live not live to eat style. i never feel like that with the aldi stuff we get.
must admit i wouldnt eat anything other than smart price beans, spaghetti, they taste far less sweet and salty than the big brand equivalents.:T
i for one couldnt knock aldi for the things we get, but i would never dream of doing a full shop their.0 -

If you feel you must put others down because of their choice of retailer, you might want to consider whether you are getting out enough!
I wouldn't dream of s1agging anyone off for using Aldi/Lidl/Netto for their weekly shop, but I personally choose not to, as its my hard earned money if I want to take it into M&S & Waitrose & the big 4 then thats my choice.
While I'm above s1agging anyone off for their choice of shop for THEIR weekly shopping, it seems people who choose NOT to shop their & buy unknown (to them) brands are fair game & are ripe for a bit of micky taking:rolleyes:

I am a food writer who does a lot of presentation cooking at home.
I shop at aldi/lidl 2 or 3 times a month to stock up on ingredients that I believe are higher quality than what I can get at the supermarket.
I rarely shop at asda/tesco, though occasionally at Sainsburys. I hardly ever buy processed foods like pies or lasagne. I very rarely buy meat or fish from supermarkets, I prefer to use butchers/fishmongers - better, cheaper and not messed with. (I do buy deli meat from aldi/lidl. It is, on the whole, *better* quality than supermarkets, and much cheaper than either supermarkets or speciality delis.)
I am fortunate enough to earn a good salary, and seldom budget myself in terms of ingredients. So, I buy things from aldi/lidl because they are better - or at the very least, equivalent to what I could buy elsewhere.
Incidentally, I recently saw a review on a food show about different supermarket own goods - doing a blind taste test between aldi, lidl and the big 4 (own brand, not value/ premium ranges). If I remember rightly, aldi or lidl were always in the top 2, and never in the bottom 2. Items included yoghurt, sun dried tomatoes, tinned tomatoes, lasagne, parma ham, and a couple of others I can't recall.
I think limiting your choices because of perceived 'stink' or embarrassment about carrying shopping bags is a very ignorant form of snobbery. Why limit yourself to poorer quality, more expensive, more highly processed supermarket goods because you're worried about what people will think? Madness!:money: I heart Martin! :money:0 -
Nice one Chivas, except I can't really believe that meat and fish is cheaper at butchers/fishmongers! Not round here, anyway.0

Thanks!
I live in Brighton - I recently bought a 2.5 lb cod for £4 from my local fishmonger, squid is dirt cheap, as is mackerel/bream/plaiceLucky to be on the sea - plus it is all local produce!
English lamb is cheaper in my butchers by a quid or 2 per equiv leg, I can pick up hocks for less than a pound for stocks and soups. Lean minced beef/pork is cheaper than supermarkets, though haven't checked prices for a while. The best buy to me though is the bacon - about half the price for amazing quality!
Slightly off topic, buying free-range large eggs from the cheese and egg stall are half price compared with supermarket prices.
I guess I am lucky that I have a permanent market on my way home from work - most of these stalls are in the same place!:money: I heart Martin! :money:0 -
... as its my hard earned money if I want to take it into M&S & Waitrose & the big 4 then thats my choice.
You fork 60 pounds, and what do you get?
A small bag from Waitrose, and deeper in debt.
St Albrecht don't ya call me, cos I can't go...
I owe my soul to the M&S store.
Yes, you may shop where you want. Just don't expect anybody to stand in shock and awe for where you spend your hard earned money.(Not like you did.)
Respectfully Yours,

From Telegraph letters 11 Sept:
Sir
Joanna Blythman (Features, September 10) is right about "class-conscious shoppers".
I was standing in the check-out queue at Netto when a woman’s mobile went off.
"Can I call you back?" she asked the caller. "I'm in Sainsbury's."
I don't have a Lidl or an Aldi (or a Netto) near me but if I was passing I'd have a look around. I must admit I had thought they were full of nasty cheap muck but, from the comments here, perhaps that's not true in Aldi's case. And certainly branded goods like Hellmann's, Heinz, etc. are the same from anywhere, differing only on price.0 -

I try & make use of the offers from M&S & Waitrose and the big 4.
So I do quite well thank you.
I don't owe anything to M&S and I'm not deeply in debt thank you;)
I don't expect anyone to stand in shock & awe at anything I do, least of all my weekly shop.
And I do earn my own money thank you:D0 -
