It's always entertaining to watch people showing themselves up as complete snobs.
"By the way, did I let it shine through how loaded I am?"
Actually, it's more a case of "By the way, did I let it shine through how loaded I'd like people to think I am?"
The "snobs" on this thread amuse me. Most of them seem to have trouble handling basic English, yet they persist in slagging off supermarkets they are not forced to use. They come across as incredibly superficial, where image ("Oh, you wouldn't catch me shopping in Lidl/Aldi/Netto/Farm Foods even if they were the last supermarkets on Earth! Give me Waitrose and M&S any day!") is more important than common sense. If you can buy quality products for less money, what difference does it make how the store is run? This is a money saving site, yet all I see from the "snobs" are ways to waste money.
I am able to afford to shop in the more "upmarket" supermarkets (M&S and Waitrose/Ocado - Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons are not "upmarket", by the way), but I choose to spend my money based on quality and cost, rather than just on image alone. I shop at Aldi, Lidl and Tesco mostly. If you go to mainland Europe, you'll see lots of new Benzs, Audis, BMWs and Porsches parked outside the Aldi and Lidl stores. On the continent, you are considered to be a smart person if you shop based on quality and cost. Aldi and Lidl have no image problems across the Channel. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

I'd hope that's also true here!Stompa0 -
Truth be told; Justice be done.
The continent has the same proportion of stupid people as Britain has. No better, no worse.
In Germany, however, you are considered thick as **** if you don't get your everyday basics at Aldi or Lidl.

a) Baskets have a tendency to go walkies and need to be replaced. This increases overhead.
b) You can't put many items into a basket, and they want you to buy a trolley's load. It's their way to nudge people into buying more.
i only buy what i can carry so i buy less :rotfl:0 -
this website should be required reading for all psychology undergraduate students.
i love it the way people feel so strongly about shops :rotfl:
my advice is, buy the offers from M & S, buy the offers and the basics from the main supermarkets, and then stock up at the cheap shops on the good quality good value goods.
for me that's the only way to make ends meet. i almost never buy things at full price at the s/markets.
i might be skint but that doesn't mean i don't like the luxury products, but won't pay full whack.0 -

Could not agree more! It is amazing how some people's sense of personal identity and status is tied up with the place that they shop! We've had people saying 'you get what you pay for' which is so contrary to the MSE ideal as to be astounding! We've had people making comments who have never even been into an Aldi/Lidl. A lot of it would be funny until you get to the people who reckon that people who shop in the so called 'discounters' all smell. I don't recall encountering those sorts of comments since I left primary school and I'm ashamed to share a forum with people who have those sorts of ridiculous views.
My cupboards and fridge are full of Aldi, M&S, Sainsbury and Lidl products depending on what I perceive to be the value of those individual products in my nearby supermarkets. Every retailer sells products that are bad for you and products that are good for you (if you want a diet of pop and pies you can find it anywhere). Every retailer has meat products which are, in my Mum's words 'hoof and horn'. It is up to you if you buy them. Me, I read the ingredients labels and make my own decisions on quality - and it rarely equates to price or brand. However, I don't want to pay a premium on my products for a massive advertising campaign fronted by a celebrity. I consider a fast throughput on the tills to be an advantage. I've had nice staff and bad staff in every single retailer I've visited from the so called 'top' to the so called 'bottom'. I've never been overcharged in Aldi but have been so regularly overcharged in Sainsbury me and the manager are on first name terms.
There is a single labour pool for staff in your area and these guys are all your neighbours doing a job (they are not cloning helpful/unhelpful staff in individual supermarket facilities somewhere). There is a small number of factories making food products in this country and all the supermarkets are buying from the same ones - in most cases only the label changes.
So, shop where you feel most comfortable. But it is only shopping. If you feel you must put others down because of their choice of retailer, you might want to consider whether you are getting out enough!0 -

Absolutely brilliant post, Peartree, all the way through! :T:T:T
So good it may well appear twice.0 -
I've never been to an Aldi or Netto but I do like Lidl. They have some v. nice biscuits and so on and with a sweet tooth like mine, it's often cheaper to buy them there. Also some of the things are European makes that you wouldn't get anywhere else, quite good fun to try them.
I have noticed however that fresh bread, fruit and so on bought there tends to go off quickly. I agree with all those who said "buy in bulk/essentials there and do your weekly shopping somewhere else." I'm a vegetarian so I can't comment on the meat, fish, deli &c.0 -
