Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

Phoned Sky yesterday and was offered half price TV for 6 months. Was going to transfer over to them for phone and broadband but O2 offered me a much better deal. Phoned up today and got Sky to give me the half-price TV for 6 months anyway.
Total bill for all 3 services down from £61/mo to £26.75/mo over the course of a year. \o/ (OK, I dropped the HD package and one entertainment mix but I didn't want HD (I can see the difference but it's not worth a tenner a month!) and didn't need the entertainment mix!)0 -
Not sure if this is the right thread.
But as an exisiting user (shortly to cancel) has anyone else been hit by this 'channel alignment'? Where Sky say you have to subscribe the regular (non HD) channel to be able to receive the HD version (i.e., have Sky Arts 1 in your package to be able to see Sky Arts 1 HD in your HD package)?
I have recently had Sky chop 75% of my HD channels with this excuse and of course no compensation of reduction in subs!
So they should not be surprised I am cancelling.
Even in their letter they said "we realise you will be annoyed by this"! Too damn right!
Nigel.
P.S. It seems curious to me that on the one hand they seem to bend over backwards (free boxes, half price for 6 months etc.) to get new customers. Then be prepared to screw exisiting customers to the wall and be happy for them to cancel!0 -
I called up sky last week to cancel after reviewing all the information in this thread and I'd just like to thank everyone for all there posts. On the first call (last tuesday) I got the 6 months half price package deal - reducing my monthly payment from £48 to £24.
I asked about HD deals but he told me he could only offer one deal per call.
I called back on Saturday and was offered free HD box and installation (plus £10 month/12 months). Although I have 30 days to cancel the HD - might give them a call at the end of this cancellation period and see if they can offer me anything else.
Has anyone else been offered HD for free after they tried to cancel during the 30 day period?
I am still currently getting half price line rental from sky and this is due to expire on 7 Nov - going to call again then and see if they can offer me anything - think I might be pushing my luck though!
Thanks again to everyone.Grocery Challenge Nov £288.12/£250
Weekly Spend Challenge: 7Nov £23.30/£30 14Nov EEK!/£70 21Nov £0/£30

The virgin Media service is a lot more expensive than the current Sky offers - It is useful to know that VM will price match these sky offers, they just are not advertising it for some reason. So use the sky offers site to price up your service then get on the phone to VM and bingo - I got a reduction of over 40% in my bill.0

Just contacted Virgin re getting a V+HD box. Quoted one-off cost of £49 BUT an extra £40 for installation. When I cribbed, they offered me self-installation at £20 - the £20 being for post, packaging and bits. Extra £5 pm on my basic TV and broadband rental = £38 pm. Could have XL package at £42.50, including V+HD box, so only £4.50 extra.
Can anyone tell me, a mere simpleton, what will happen when everything is HD and there is no analogue TV. Wont Virgin have to provide the HD service anyway?
Any advice would be very welcome.0 -
I want to join sky! how do i get them to give me a special deal!? x0

Apologies if this has been asked a million times before (I have read back a number of pages but haven't had chance to read the whole thread). I was wondering what deals it is possible to get out of Sky if you're on a low-end package? I've been with Sky about 2.5 years and I have a Sky+ box with a 2 pack subscription, paying £20 p/m. I've had (and cancelled) Sky Broadband in the past and wouldn't want to go back to it, or take out their phone package. So if I threatened to leave I imagine they wouldn't try too hard to keep me as opposed to someone with the Sports and Movies packages. From people's experiences, can anyone please advise me on what I should be able to get (if anything)?0

Getting deals from SKY has been my favourite passtime since finding this thread!!!!!!!!:j
Having already received free phonecalls, line rental and half price broadband and HD subscription etc etc earlier this year:D, came back from holiday to find my SKY HD box had developed a mind of it's own..............recording random programmes, stating recording failed due to power cut on series links and refusing to pause or playback on some SKY channels.
Phoned sales to discuss "a deal" on a replacement box - nothing doing! I then asked how long I would need to cancel my current HD package before I was entitled to receive a free HD box as a new customer? (DH sat there rolling his eyes and telling me just to pay the money for the new box. Not very MSE of him);)
Put straight through to cancellations who immediatley informed me as a valued customer I was entitled to a free HD box and an engineer would be with me on Sunday morning to install it!!!!! Result....
P.S DH still rolling eyes saying I should have held out for the new HD TB box, you just can't please some people!!:rotfl::rotfl:

We cancelled Sky a month ago. Last week we were phoned by a French sounding woman & offered ANY package 1/2 price for a year. We declined. I did hint that we'd like a Sky+ box as we frequently missed programs we wanted to watch. I'd also like to see what HD was like on our new TV.
This morning had a letter offering us 1/2 price any package for a year + a £50 Marks & Spencer voucher. Am REALLY tempted (we only had 2 mixes) but would really like a Sky+ box preferably HD.
Has anyone blagged this - How? Should I take the offer above?
Comp-uter guy - you should be able to get this.0 -

The only boxes Sky offer now are the Sky+HD ones.0
