Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

We were on the £21.99 package and only really watched E4, so in the end I decided to buy a freeview box and cancel sky altogether. When I rang Sky to cancel, they fist offered me a Sky+ box for £99 with no extra £10 monthly charge, then they offered me the Sky box for a special price of £69 with no extra charge and as a last resort finally offered me 3 months subscription at half price. I may have taken them up if they showed E4 and I already hadn't bought my freeview box.0

Managed to get a discount from telewest on what I was paying. I have 2mb broadband, telephone and the basic tv package from them.
I called them up and told them that I was considering cancelling my tv package as I was going to get a freeview box. The nice lady on the phone said that she would reduce the cost of my basic tv package to £3 a month (she said that it was equivalent of the cost of a freeview box for the year). I said that it was an okay offer but that I had noticed on their website that they offer tv, broadband and phone for £30 a month for new customers. Asked if I could get that offer as I felt discriminated against for being a loyal customer!
The nice lady said no problem so I saved just under £10 a month for the new package with the added bonus of now getting free local and national phone calls at the weekend thrown in too. Not a huge amount but better in my pocket than theirs!

Deviating slighly....The warranty on my parents Sky has expired. They have been offered an extended year warranty for £60. Is this worth it? What have other MSE's with Sky done?Filiss0

Hi i'm new to site. i've been reading for months but first posting!!!!
just wondering how to get sky+ cheaper. i phoned yesterday & asked about upgrading to the full package & how much was sky +. she gave me a price of £199 for the box & £60 fitting, when i said no thanks i'll think about it she said have a good day.
then today phoned up & asked if i wanted to cancel what should i do. she said you phone up & give 30 days notice no questions about why do we want to cancel.
do you think we have missed the boat on the cheaper offers or is there some thing els we should o0 -
Welcome mummytwinton
First of all the ONLY department that can offer you the cheaper deal on sky+ is the cancellation department. Therefore you really need to bite the bullet and state quite clearly that you really want the sky+ at the same rate they are offering to new users (£49), and if they say it will cost more (and they will) then state that you are really unhappy with the treatment given to existing customers and reluctantly you wish to cancel. At this point, they will pass you to cancellations where you go through the strory again, and they should offer you a sky+ deal that you do like ( perservere to get the deal without multiroom) it does exist.
If they insist they cannot match the price and so will cancel you...... you can just change you mind and decide to stay. Nothing lost!
Good luck.0 -
lionking, do NOT get the extra warranty!, if & when the box breaks down, go to sky & threaten to leave sky as you can't afford the cost of repairs, it works
, hope this helps, goodluck
No one said it was gonna be easy!0 -

well what can i say first time on site & your advice worked. i phoned up asked if there was any deals on SKY+ & got no sorry so i said i would cancel then. got passed though & told themi wanted to cancel so i can save the money so in a few months we could get SKY+ he then said he would do me a deal all in for £65. so they are coming out next wed
THANK YOU SO MUCH Scrumshie0 -
You are welcome mummytwinton.
Glad it worked. You will love sky+.
LionKing....shaysmum is right. DO NOT take out warranty. The cancellations depart have the power to offer you a free of charge service call (which means they fix repair or replace the equipment). It is ONLY the cancellations department, that can do this.
The technical department will want a £65 fee!!0 -
Thanks Guys,
I rang cancellations after a bit of haggling sky+ came dowm from £260 inc fitting to £99 and finally to £65 incuding fitting :j
needed a bit of pushing but they got there in the end. Helped that the helpful guy needed one more deal to hit his target for the night.
Top job.
Thanks
Ian0
