Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

I moved house recently and there was no sky dish at the new property. I knew from another forum that sky are trying like mad to retain cutomers.
I phoned up, asked to cancel and got offered the same deal, free install and a sky+ box all for £49.
Excuse my ignorance, but all those who accepted this deal of free instal + £49 Sky+, is this on top of the monthly package that you are already paying, or what?
Thanks.0 -

i got the £49 + free install deal too
it is a one off payment of £49 for the box, it is normally £99 plus £30 install. They used to charge an extra £10 a month on your subscription for sky+ but thats been done away with now.
Sky+ is brill, well worth the £490 -

Most of the Sky installers/aerial erectors in the local newspapers are advertising Sky + for £49 free install anyone that pays more is being done.

Anyone got an HD box? I got mine on the 31st of July and just got it replaced as it kept turning itself off. The new one has done it twice already and we only got it on Tuesday.0

Yes. It started turning itself off in the evening to start with, but then the last twice it was in the morning and afternoon, and took 40 and 20 minutes to come back on. The Sky engineer didn't even have a look at my HD box. He just asked what had happened and then went out to his van to get a new one. I love the HD and Sky+. I just hope we're not going to be dogged with this problem all the time. We had our last box for years and never had a problem with it.0 -

Phoned this morning and whilst getting transferred from CS got cut off! Rang back annoyed and went straight to "leaving" dept. Explained all the issues-I had a really crap time with Virgin during the summer-and mentioned talk Talk. Ended up with the same TV and BB package, free evening and weekend calls and a saving of £16 a month:T
I'm tied in for 12 months but that shouldn't be a problem.
Thanks to everyone who said it could be done:money:

Been with Telewest/ Virgin for years and getting increasingly annoyed with new subscribers getting all the best deals. With the football season back with us wanted to add Sky Sports , but decided to take the advice here and do some haggling. This is what i was on:
Telephone £11
Starter TV £5.50
Broadband L £25
Total £41.50
After my opening gambit--Old customers treated badly , thinking of switching -- i was immediately offered an upgrade from starter tv to Extra Large TV for an extra 50p , and as an Extra Large Tv subscriber , Sky Sports for £18 month rather than the £26.50 per month i was paying till i turned it off in May.
So for an extra £18.50 a month i've got all the Sports channels-Setanta is part of the Extra Large package- plus all the other extra channels , MTV etc.
The chap i spoke to said this offer had only come into operation today , so presumably it applies to everybody. So if your a sports fan you can get this deal without any haggling.0
