  • Not Sure about what will happen with the SKY / Virgin gridlock of SKYOne? but looks like that both parties will back off few steps and virginmedia customer will get sky one.
Why? Sky will otherwise loose a lot from advert and Virgin will loose customers and many of them wont join sky but will go to freeview

Money saver can always get most out of this situation.
So as a money saving(yet to become an) expert.
I called up and chatted with virginmedia retention person and shown that i am worried(cant threat them that I will leave them can I as I already have 7 months left in my contract)
Then ask him to some compensation.
He gave me BB M (2 mb)
    TV Large(for 6 mnths)
all for 9.99.(I dont have phone from them)

Hello I can't call this as money saving can I?
I was already on bb-2 mb and TV M (or free) for 9.99 But I managed to get more out of my money
If you wanna more call before they reach an agreement.
If anyone get a better deal then let me know as I wanna save MORE.....

    Happy moneysaving

Swami, if you get more for your money in a sense it is moneysaving - it's what works for you. Can you tell what you got?

    TOBRUK,
I Joined telewest in March 2006
    14.99 for 2 mb broadband
October did house move and Telewest reseted my contract for another 12 mnths
In compensation they offer me broadband for 9.99
I asked for free TV (it was available only with the phone)
they give me starter TV free for 6 mnths after that 5.99
Asked me to call after 6 mnths(march to get similar deal)

Called up last Saturday and managed to extend my deal
    Free TV
    2 mb bb for 9.99

When I read abt SKy one problem I thought let me make more of my money.
My objective was to get more at no extra cost(could have paid 3 pound extra if they give me 4 mb + xl tv but for anything else I was ready to say no and stay with current deal)

After phone call today, I managed to get
    2 mb BB 9.99
TV L free for 6 mnths

See I will argue that I didnt saved any money but got more out of it. As I was never ready to pay more. I don't need L pack just wanted it. If I had the need I would have paid more I just wanted so I knew I am not going to pay more.
Like Peter said in anothetr post that he was very happy for a deal with them and then he saw 3 for 30 and realised it is not.
Yes getting more out of ur money is ina way money saving but not exactly as I would never pay more otherwise
Many fellow MSe will think what a big deal I made but I was in middle of my contract (7 month left) and that made it special
    HAppy money saving

  • I would really like some advice on how to get my sky package cheaper, have read quite a bit of the thread but still a little confused.

I have sky TV (no broadband or phone with them).

The package I have costs £42.50 a month which I believe is everything except for 1 of the sports packages.

I rang them today saying I was thinking of going back to telewest and was enquiring about any new deals/packages and cancellation terms.

I was told nothing they could do I would have to downgrade my package to get it cheaper and that I had to give 30 days and she could sort that out for me now:eek: (went into panic mode)

I told her I would call back once I knew what telewest were going to charge, so sort of lost my bottle a bit:o

Does anyone think I could get my package cheaper and if I have to threaten cancellation how exactly does that work, do they write to you with a date or does it just cease??

Sorry about all the questions all you seem to be experts

Cancellation from Sky will require 30 days notice, however you can downgrade straight away if that is what you wish.

There is a ploy by Sky to tell you that you need to give 30 days to cancel, but you can downgrade your package to the minimum without notice and give 30 days notice to cancel on the minimum package.

If they don't tell you about it and you don't know, you continue paying your full package until the account ends and Sky takes more money from you than you need give them.

It is insidious that when you ask to cancel that they don't tell you that you can cancel some of it today and the remainder in 30 days - it is presented to as a black and white position.

For my part I gave up Sky last year and am happy enough with Freeview, Freesat and my TiVo working overtime.

Just phoned Sky via 08000512595, Cancellations, Turnaround, told them I'd been offered Sky+ for £49 before Christmas, got no hassle, immediately was told yes it was available, being installed next Monday
  • I think when our reduced Sky+ fee ends in a couple of months we're going to cancel.
Actually, my wife's gonna cancel cos it's in her maiden name.
I will then phone up and get a subscription as a new customer - which should mean shiny new equipment and a decent price for a year.

As for Virgin vs Sky - personally I think Sky are within their rights to be re-negotiating the deal for Sky One etc. Since the arrival of Lost, 24, Nip/Tuck etc. it's pretty much THE channel.
It's no real loss to Sky if Virgin throw their toys out of the pram about it.

when you have your sky+ installed, ask the installer nicely if he would mind running a spare cable from the dish as you want to use the old box for freesat. he probably won't run it all the way to your new location but he should leave enough cable for you do to it yourself.

bear in mind he doesn't have to do this for you but will hopefully do it if he is nice/you give him enough tea and biscuits/give him £20 etc. when i had sky+ installed the bloke did it for free, i had to run it to the box but i wanted to do this bit myself anyway, but when my dad got sky+ the bloke wouldn't even do it for some cash, so it depends on the installer in question

however if you get one who wont do it, it is easy to do yourself ( i did my dad's for him) just need some cable

This sounds good to me but I'd have to do it myself.

I had Sky + installed a few weeks back but I still have the old sky box.

If I was to put the sky box in another room by the sounds of it I could then just lead another cable from the satellite to the old box. Is that correct?

Is it straight forward were I would need to connect the cable to the satellite and also is would I be up and running straight away with 'Freesat' or would I need to ring and activate it.

    Cheers for the help.
