Sub-£350 powerful laptops discussion

  • I'm looking for a new laptop for under £300. I need it to be fast when it comes to internet browsing (I often have 10+ tabs open at once when completing research), multitasking with word/excel/powerpoint managing to flick between them without lagging, watching movies, downloading content etc (sorry I don't know any of the 'technical' terms!) It will mainly be for uni. I don't do any gaming.

I don't want to buy it from eBay and I don't want it to be refurbished. This is a personal preference and I don't want anyone to argue with me over this. :)

I've found this here and wondered if anyone could tell me if it's any good?

If not, do you know of any other good deals around at the moment for under £300? £350 at the max. I would be happy to purchase today if a good deal comes up.

    Thanks a bunch :)

Somebody on here will just be itching to tell you the error of your ways in this approach!
As for the laptop, well, the 6GB stands out of course, so no need to worry over how many windows you have open. The (up to) 8 hour battery that charges in an hour is also impressive, but wouldn't you be happier with a processor a little faster than 1.9GHz at this price?

Yes, I know!! It's just a personal choice. I have had terrible dealing with eBay before and it has completely put me off...

I really don't understand anything at all about computers and laptops, so a 1.9GHz means nothing to me! I have come across ones that have a higher GHz but are 4GB - does this matter? Would a higher GHz be better than the higher GB?

I have found this one on Asda as we get 10% off at Asda as we work there - http://direct.asda.com/Dell-N5050-15.6ins-Laptop---Intel-Core-i3---500GB-Hard-Drive/000545853,default,pd.html

    That says:

    Processor Speed 2.30 Ghz
    RAM (MB) 4GB

So would this be quicker than the other because of the GHz, or about the same because the RAM is lower?!

Sorry to seem simple, but I really don't have a clue :rotfl:

Please can someone give me an opinion on this latop, looking for one that's under £300, my main use is internet browsing / these forums / shopping/ facebook / bingo sites and mainly entering competitions (sounds rather sad I know!!) so tend to have lots of tabs open at once. I never watch movies on it or play games but do sometimes listen to music.
Thanks so much in advance as I have no idea on what I need! :-)

Actually it was an uppercase 'NO', but the forum software changed it. :)

All other considerations being equal, always go for the one where the balance is in favour of the CPU. This is because if the RAM turns out to be too low, you can easily (and, nowadays, cheaply) increase it, whereas you wouldn't be able to upgrade the CPU. Bear in mind that 32-bit machines cannot 'see' more than 4GB of RAM. In practice, you may even find that 2GB is actually enough for your needs, so don't discount machines for that reason alone.
You'll want a dual-core CPU, and speed isn't the only consideration when comparing processors, however I'm not knowledgeable enough to advise you further on them.

So the poster got shouted at for his previous query (the one in which he wrote 'Thanks so much in advance'). Then, when asking for a simple 'one or t'other' explanation to your blunt reply, you still failed to provide it. You are wasting his time, which rather discredits your claim that you are 'making a difference' on these boards.
  • Hi All,

I'm looking for a laptop under £450 (yes I know the thread is sub £350 but didn't want to start a new thread and get told off for it!).

I need it to work from home remotely, running numerous large Excel spreadsheets simultaneously. Also uploading photos, general surfing - possibly watching programmes on iPlayer.

I'm thinking I'll need an i5 so was looking at these 3:

    Toshibahttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-C855-18D-15-6-inch-i5-3210M/dp/B008CO24DC/ref=sr_1_21?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1349431495&sr=1-21

    Samsung http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-NP350V5C-Integrated-Graphics-Windows/dp/B008EJGJKO/ref=sr_1_13?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1349431495&sr=1-13

    Asus http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-15-6-inch-Graphics-Windows-Premium/dp/B00871NLJG/ref=sr_1_17?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1349431495&sr=1-17

    Any preferences?

    Thanks in advance,
    Charlie
