Hi I've now got a HP Pavilion 2tb 8g laptop from Currys for £399.99, not sure if it's that price now as it was in the sale and may have gone back to original price of £500.

What is your definition of 'good'? What will it be used for?

1) Get a decent business (refurbished) notebook! They are far far better quality and durability than consumer models. For example, I have observed that consumer notebook mouse pad became less responsive within a couple of years. This never happens to Business notebook.

2) Don't buy a hard disk (60 years old technology) computer at 2018, Get an SSD!!! Smartphone, Tablet use a flash memory, it is time to switch to a flash memory based storage, SSD (Solid State Drive) for computers!!

£ 350 selection
Dell Latitude E6430 £165
i5-3340M 2.70GHz
160GB (will be swapped with MX300, see the below)
upgrade to 8GB £40
Windows 10 home
1 Year RTB Warranty £25
sub Total : £230

Crucial MX300 525GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive 3year warranty £ 111.14

Total : £341.14

You just need to swap a hard disk with MX300, and install Windows 10 Home, using the existing the product key, that’s it, Welcome to 2018 with an SSD (Alternatively you can make a diskclone from a hard disk to an SSD) It is easy, you need to do that!

Welcome to "flash" 2018, Happy SSD computing :)

Consumer Notebook Brand - HP Pavilion Dell Inspiron Toshiba Satellite Lenovo Ideapad

Well, you don't need a new computer, just an SSD, according to Crucial (One of the biggest memory and SSD manufacturer in the world.
As you may know, last 6-8 years CPU cost/performance is completely flat. (i.e. you have no reason to replace your computer to increase the performance, EXCEPT AN SSD)
That's why so many smart MSE members recommend SSD now, I suppose SSD upgrade is the best cost - effective money saving /performance improvement
