  • two primary considerations, in my mind , processor then RAM. it's not as if you see anything these days on the market with a tiny hard drive unless you've got a video libaray the size of blockbuster anything up there will suffice. processor: anything with an intel i3 in it will go faster than 99.9% of users will ever need. over 4 gig ram also fine then you look at reliability/name. is possible to get a sub 350 laptop with i5 and 4-6 gigs in some places. very very nice.

if you're wanting to game you don't want a laptop anyway, so just think i3 or higher without letting them scrimp it back on the lack of ram and it'll be good for a number or years!

Was going to start a new thread but me question probably fits here quite well.

My OH wants an apple laptop for Xmas, but we don't have that kind of money but he's said that second hand ones aren't too expensive. It doesn't have to be the newest or highest spec machine - he basically wants to use it for GarageBand to record music on. We don't have home Internet so it wouldn't be used for browsing, and he's no gamer so non of that either. Probably would like a word processor.

I've only ever used PCs or Laptops running Windows so I don't even know where to start.

Does anyone know what sort of thing I should be looking for? Would ebay be a good place to start? I don't even know what the different models are so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Have a look at Shop Mac for the range of current models and prices there, which would be more expensive, but for macs in better condition, with one-year warranty and more reliable service. Then shop around for cheaper, possibly older, models.

Had a read back a few pages and a lot of the decent specced laptops posted here in the last 4-5 months have increased in price by a large amount.
So now I have been asked to "find" a laptop for my sister. She has £350 to spend and is looking for something fast and decent specced. She wont be doing anything out of the ordinary probable a bit of streaming (XBMC), and a bit of photoshop work as well as some office work (Microsoft Office).
So with them uses in mind and the budget can anyone recommend anything current that is a good deal ?

I am looking for a laptop in this range that will be able to run new versions of Lightroom, Photoshop and Office as well as a tad of Football Manager, I like the look of the smaller screen ones as I have to need to lug it around with all of my camera equipment while at shoots/events
    Thanks

The sales are on and its time to buy a new laptop - my old one will be used for work after ditching most of the programmes etc it should be OK (3 years old and the battery has failed).

New one to surf the net, simple spread sheets (open office or similar) watch the odd movie, iplayer / itunes etc.

I'm conscious that you can spend too much, which is the better buy?

How long do laptops last on average? Those with existing laptops, how old are the ones you are replacing today? 3, 5, 7 years or even older?
