That thread is amazing but I have been told my hard drive is corrupted and that is why it takes ages to boot/ do anything. They have also told me my external hard drive won't mount and will have to go to data recovery specialists if I really want my data. Double hit!

Who's they, and what's the proof?

What does corrupted mean, logical corruption is not a physical fault and can be fixed with chkdsk c: /F.

You may wish to start a new thread about your problems, internal and external.

A new internal hard disk is around £40, if your hard disk is really faulty

if it boots, you may still be able to backup, preferably with macrium free

Thank you people. I could post separately about my laptop "challenges" when have access to keyboard so a) not clog up this thread b) can type properly not having to use a blinking touchscreen. I've had a really kind offer of help from one of you which was beyond what I expect with sorting this out. Really amazing the people that use this site. Enough to help restore more faith in human nature!

The sales are on and its time to buy a new laptop - my old one will be used for work after ditching most of the programmes etc it should be OK (3 years old and the battery has failed).

New one to surf the net, simple spread sheets (open office or similar) watch the odd movie, iplayer / itunes etc.

I'm conscious that you can spend too much, which is the better buy?

Hi, im looking for a new laptop to replace my 6 year old dell laptop which is starting to show its age.

It'll be mainly used for internet browsing, excel and iplayer/movies. I tend to have a lot on the go at once which is where my current laptop is really struggling. It'd also be good if it could play the 1080p video from my camera, which my laptop can barely manage. I'm not bothered about short battery life or if it's heavy/bulky, so happy to compromise there if it means I'll get better performance for my money.

I'd originally set a budget of £350, but if I can get a suitable laptop for cheaper that'd be great. There's so many different versions of processors and I know very little about them so I've found it hard to compare laptops. However this seems to have a decent processor for the price and 6gb ram which should be enough.

Any opinions on this? Or suggestions for significantly better laptops under £350?

    Thanks :)
