This one looks pretty interesting. My wife wants us to get a new laptop as ours broke. Would be for general stuff really. Maybe the occasional little game.
Can anyone comment on this one? Whats your opinion's on it?

The 4GB ram and 500GB disk may be a better compromise. And if you use Pixmania via Quidco you'll get £16 (ish) back. Note the only real reason I mention Acer is that you can get a cheap 3 year warranty. Never had one myself. Pretty average laptop. I'll have another look for sub-£350 i3 laptops... (not many about at the moment)...

EDIT: the 4GB ram 500GB Acer (I think its the same one) is reviewed via Tesco site here. http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.212-8511.aspx
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

It was a cheap one I "came across", charger became faulty and appears to have put through too many vaults or similar. Had it open and its gooseed, low spec so not worth replacing the board.

I'll keep that in mind. Disk space is not too much of an issue at the moment as I use my old laptops hard drive as an external and have the home pc networked. Never use it (years old and slow) so its just there as network storage.
  • I would be very careful with Acer laptops. My ten year old had one for Christmas last year with a 3 year warranty and last week the case fell apart and windows stopped loading. Acer said it's physical damage not covered by the warranty (there is no sign of mistreatment) and in any case software not loading is not covered by the warranty whatever the cause. They have quoted £170 to repair a £350 laptop. The warranty doesn't seem to be a lot of use if it doesn't cover windows not starting and in any case they can claim whatever went wrong is due to physical damage. We've had laptops for the other three kids with no problems for years and years. I won't be buying another Acer laptop.

To be fair that will be the case with any computer warranty.

software not loading can usually be cured by reinstalling windows from the factory restore partition or disc (assuming you created them using erecovery)

  • In this case windows wouldn't reinstall, probaly due to a hardware problem caused by the faulty case. I just think it's a bit too easy for Acer to make the cases too flimsy and then walk away from the warranty.
