  • oops forgot to say.....following qoute taken from MSE, so the question is when will EON hike EOES 8 up.

Think I will stick with EOES 5 for a bit yet

It's all slightly different with online tariffs...
While energy companies have increased their main tariffs, some haven't yet upped their online tariffs, including British Gas Click Energy 5 and E.ON EnergyOnline Extra Saver 8.

Internet rates are usually much cheaper, so providers delay increasing prices hoping that in the switching frenzy that follows price rise announcements, many people will switch to them as they look massively cheaper.

While in general they are cheaper, this means a big chunk of the saving may simply be because their price hasn't increased yet. So before switching to an online tariff, check whether its price has increased in price rise charts, and if it hasn't, assume a 20-25% price rise is still to come.
  • Just moved from v5 to v8. Guy says I will save £157 pa as this is their cheapest online tariff at present. He did say however to expect an increase in the tariff in the winter.

I don't see a problem as long as you check back regularly to compare and move again if something cheaper comes along.

Decided to also make the move from v5 to v8 (online). As you said: if the increase the price in a few month, i might go and see elsewhere.
  • I live in Glasgow. I`m on V5 and compared to V8 on energyhelpline by shitching i could save only 10 pounds per year so I will stay on V5. I`m in Eon from 15th of april have just notice that they didnt told me about small rise from 1st June for gas : 2.451p to 2.774p and from 28 August im paying 3.388p per kWh ; Standing Charge goes from 7.891p to 11.59p and now it is 20.79p.
for electricity : 9.09p to 10.14p and from 27th august 10.32p per kWh ; Standing charge: 18.86p to 21.13p and now to 38.22p per day.

I don't think energyhelpline is up to date with the new prices for V5.

Thta's not right I'm afraid, it may turn out to be true (who knows with hindsight?) but Eon haven't said to it's staff anything other than it's not increased that rate yet

That information is not correct. If you log into your eon online account, and click on 'switch', it will show you the tariff you are on now, and all the ones that you can switch to. You will find your V5 tariff unit rates are considerably higher than the V8 rates, and I would advise you to switch. Discounts are not shown, and are slighly lower than V5.
  • When I compared the discount I get on V5 with what I would get with V8 I found I get 20% + 6% for direct debit with V5 but only 7.3% + 6% direct debit with V8.

The upshot of this is although the unit rates are higher with V5 taking into account the respective discounts at todays rates I'd actually be paying pretty much the same on either version. However, as the V8 prices haven't increased yet, once they do, (and it's only a matter of time) then I'd be far worse off on V8.

Discounts certainly seem to vary greatly depending on the geographical region you're in. I know many on here are reporting that for them the difference in discount between the 2 versions is far less that it is for me.

I'm in the "Northern" area by the way.

You would not be paying anywhere near the same. I gain over 25% in lower unit rates by moving to V8, but lose out only 5.7% in lower discounts. The gamble is, of course, how long before they increase V8 unit rates.

PS I think your V5 discount 20% INCLUDES the 6% for direct debit - not in addition to

The 20% discount is in addition to the 6% direct debit discount. If you want to check for yourself go onto energy helpline. Put your postcode in as NE1 2AL (a northern postcode). Click to say you want to compare electricity only and make out that you're on the Eon Electricity Online Extra Saver 5 and that you have Economy 7.

When you get onto the "Your energy results" screen click on Click here to view your current tariff details

You will see the total discount is 26%

The point I was trying to make in my last post is that the size of the discount of version 5 varies greatly depending on what geographical area you're in.

For my area the Version 8 total discount is just 13.3% which means that for my usage even though the unit rates are lower with V8 when you take into acount the fact that the discount is half what it is on V5 the end cost works out just £2 or £3 difference
