But say they increase the V8 tariff in a months time to a higher rate than V5 you may then be worse off.

That's the chance you take. However if you save 35% over a month it will probably be a better saving than what you may lose on the discount.

Since my post on Monday about conflicting information coming out of Eon, I finally got to speak to a Manager after I was given incorrect tariffs for the third time. I was told I would save £970.50 if I changed to V8 from V5.!!!

She insisted this was right and quoted for electricity for V8 at 25.431. I spoke to a Manager and of course she wasn't right and this is what I have been experiencing all week with Eon. Subsequently, I was told that V8 is cheaper than V5, but will be going up within 2 months. I was also told that once you move from V5, you can't move back.

I am going to let things settle for a few weeks as from this thread it looks as if other people are experiencing conflicting information as well.

I had an email from EON on 27th August in response to my question of what the new prices were fro V5. This email quoted the old prices before the 22nd increase. I have switched to V8 anyway, they do not seem to know what they are doing.

    Hi
You should be able to go back as you get 14 days to change your mind.I went to Price Protection 17 last month and decided to change back to V5 because I found I was better off with the Scottish Power fixed 2009 prices.Top that with a Quidco cashback I was saving a few quid.A quick check on www.energyhelpline.com will give you the current state of play.
V8 in my area for actual last 12 months usage shows that V8 is 71 pounds more than V5 (sorry pounds sign not working).Of course not all tariffs have gone up yet.The British Gas tariff is now exactly the same price for my area as the V5 tariff but all these cheaper tariffs will rise.

It now occurs to me that Eon are being very shrewd. If prices do go up within a couple of months, just as the higher winter usage kicks in, they will be getting a double whammy. First, the benefit of the huge price increases recently announced, plus the reduction of the online discount from 10% to 4.3%.

So, if this were true, it would benefit them enormously the more people that change. The gamble there, though - if they haven't lured sufficient new customers via the switching websites, they may leave the V8 prices lower for a lot longer than 2 months. Also, I have to say, if this was their tactic, I'm surprised that they haven't kept it top-secret.

New e-bill arrived this morning - shows prices went up on V5 on 22nd August (if you haven't already done so, get your meter readings in NOW to minimise any guesswork when they produce the bills). I have contacted them for an explanation of how the Standing Charge has near doubled - still no personal notification of the rise.

Thanks for that info which does confirm what I was told on the phone (post #29).
  • They are certainly playing a game here. Are discounts shown anywhere in your online account?
They do vary with areas of the country.

The discount comes off the total at the end of the bill.
