The only way to tell is to phone E-on (0800 056 3856) and ask for an estimate if you change. They will tell you then what the difference is. uSwitch seems to calculate the correct price too, at least for me. On uSwitch you can say you are on OS5 and it will tell your current discounts. Then you can try the same again with OS8. Of course you have to know your annual kWhrs. For me a switch to OS8 increases the annual bill so I'm staying on 5.

I just looked on uswitch, and for me, it still has the old rate for v5. v8 is the same as the old v5 rate but with a slightly lower discount. So v8 comes out a little higher than v5 on uswitch. However, logging on to your eon account gives the new higher rates for v5, which they confirmed to me on the phone were correct. So v8 is cheaper, at least for me, despite the slightly reduced discount. As has been said, the best thing to do to be sure is to call them if you want to confirm your rates.

Phoned Eon twice to confirm my tariffs and concerns then switched last Sunday and now enjoying the cheaper V8 tariff although with a 16% dual fuel/area discount, but discount is guaranteed until Nov 2009.
Be pro-active and make that call, it could save you loads......

So Freddy, the V5 rates are definitely a lot higher than V8, they actually told you this? It seems so confusing first one poster comes on and says V5 and V8 rates are the same, but it's best to stay with V5 cos the discounts are slightly better. Then another poster will come on and say V5 is a lot higher than V8 and it's best to change. I changed a while back, and the unfortunate thing is you can't view V5 after you've changed to V8.

I posted (#11) the difference of the V5 and V8 tariffs that I had access to on my online account before switching. I had it confirmed by 2 different Eon staff and other questions I had before swapping.
I don't see the confusion, only the calculated risk of the V8 tariff increasing at some point (hopefully not to soon). The longer the V8 tariff remains the same the more I am saving by switching. Yes I was sceptical on first reading this thread until I found out more info.

I am in the same situation - on the online v5 tariff. Signed into my account and it shows that the v5 prices are now dearer than v8.

I contacted energyhelpline regarding this, because their prices are still showing version 5 to be cheaper than v8 because of the difference in the discounts (the prices per unit for both elec and gas are exactly the same). They emailed me back to advise that although EON's prices have been updated on the EON website, they have not yet announced an increase in their online tariffs.

Given this and the fact that I have not yet been formally notified by EON of a price increase, I am assuming that the v5 prices have not yet been increased. I'm just going to wait and see what happens before I jump in.

I can understand your point but I would like to add that I was told on the phone that everyone will be paying the increased Save V5 tariff from 22 Aug, so I would expect peoples bills would be split with tariffs upto 22 Aug then from 22 Aug the new prices. If this is not the case then a phone call will be made.

    Hi all,

for those of you who are confused with one poster saying the prices are the same and others saying they are different....

Price differ around the country, so the units prices may be the same for some people and different for others. You need to check it out for yourself to see if it would be beneficial to you.

Dellxps - I don't think the confusion over prices is anything to do with different parts of the country. It is because some people are being told that V5 prices have gone up, and some are told they have not. This is crucial because we all know that the discounts are slightly less on V8, so if prices are the same, it is beneficial NOT to move. Trouble is, most of us already have! Grrrr
  • I've just changed over too. I was on the standing charge version of V5 and couldn't believe how much it was 41.94 pence for elec and 21.82 for gas per day. I've changed to v8 just to swop from the standing charge prices. Obviously I know I'll get higher prices for other units but when I've only used 6 units of gas in the last 3 weeks ( turn heating off in summer and use immersion) I think I'll be better off this way!
