Sorry I wasn't very clear. With my existing Virgin SIM the home screen of my phone looks like this:

    http://www.mobileburn.com/imagepop.jsp?Id=1393&file=media%2Fsonyericsson%2Fk750%2Fthumb_k750_screen_standby-Image_0478.jpg

(except of course it says 'Virgin mobile' rather than T-MOBILE).

With the ASDA SIM it says 'Asda mobile', but displayed immediately underneath this is a number 01223 or 01954. Now both of those are local dialling prefixes for the area where I am, so I assume it's relaying back some location info dependent on which phone mast it's currently talking to? (a very crude GPS!).

Vodafone used to offer a local call option - where you could make calls to local landlines or other Vodafone mobiles for 10p per minute peak (This was when they were 35p otherwise). The local landline number/s were the numbers on the display.
    ;)

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Not quite sure how it would have worked from our house given that it seems to flip between two numbers - I guess we must be on the boundary between two cells.

Mine changes of its own accord, I don't have to move the phone!

Well despite what they said my SIMs have just arrived.

They were just teasing you with that e-mail then? I'm glad you got them - mine arrived yesterday too, but I haven't got around to putting one in my phone yet.

I used to get that cell broadcast on my original Cellnet phone back in '97 and this too was to do with making calls from a local area.

  • Managed to find an ASDA sim card in store today.

I topped up, the e-voucher said on the bottom "get 10% extra"

When I phoned CS they said sorry, the 10% ended at the end of August. When I pointed out my e-voucher had been printed today, they added 10% anyway :)

Just waiting now to see if Ikea reduce their prices, as they were claiming to be cheapest!
  • Hi all

I bought a PAYG mobile from asda online the other day. When I looked at the box, there is a sticker that says "Do not accept if seal is broken".

Well, the seal was broken and there was a small piece of tape over it. I just wondered if anybody else noticed that when they bought theirs and if it's worth calling them about.

I'd be grateful for any info.

    Cheers

I bought 2 for the wife & myself, both were packaged with unbroken seals. May be a good idea to contact them about it.

  • I ported my telephone number over to asda mobile from vodafone pay and go - I discovered only after the switch had taken place, that I could not use my debit card to top up my asda mobile account, due to vodafone being asda mobile's billing agents, they simply refuse to allow my card to be used to top up my asda mobile account, saying it remains linked to my closed vodafone account.

I would advise if you are porting from vodafone to asda moible, register another card to your vodafone account first, then port away.

Can someone tell me please how to "port" my number if I go from O2 to Asda?
