Oh blast, just got an email from Asda saying: "Unfortunately your order has been delayed as we are currently out of stock due to the very high demand. We hope to despatch your item(s) to you within 5 working days, and we will send you an email to let you know when it is on its way. If there is any further delay we will contact you again.".

That's most unfortunate! I haven't received that e-mail, so can only presume I got my order in just in the nick of time. You would think that a company like ASDA would have been rather better prepared for the demand, especially as they are offering such a competitive PAYG tariff...

    I'd have thought so too!

Well despite what they said my SIMs have just arrived.

Am I correct in thinking that the 'top-up card' is the card from which you detach the actual SIM card? If so, it's a bit of a crude affair, and it would have been handy if they'd printed the phone number on the card rather than just a bar code.

Edit: Oops ignore that, apparently they don't provide a top-up card, you have to ask for one.

Hmmm, another curious thing is that on my phone (underneath Asda Mobile) it displays what appears to be a local dialling code. This seems to flip between two different dialling codes, presumably it's an indication of which transmitter it's 'talking' to at any given time?

I'm not sure what you're talking about here? Do you want to elaborate?

Sorry I wasn't very clear. With my existing Virgin SIM the home screen of my phone looks like this:

    http://www.mobileburn.com/imagepop.jsp?Id=1393&file=media%2Fsonyericsson%2Fk750%2Fthumb_k750_screen_standby-Image_0478.jpg

(except of course it says 'Virgin mobile' rather than T-MOBILE).

With the ASDA SIM it says 'Asda mobile', but displayed immediately underneath this is a number 01223 or 01954. Now both of those are local dialling prefixes for the area where I am, so I assume it's relaying back some location info dependent on which phone mast it's currently talking to? (a very crude GPS!).

Yes, thats correct. When i have an Asda or Vodafone sim card in my phone i get that too.

If you want to disable this look in your phone menu for something called "Cell broadcast" and deselct/disable the option.

Many thanks for solving the mystery! It appears it's called 'cell information' on my phone.
