It seems that cancelling a direct debit can lead to consequences from Setanta irrespective of the reason for it being cancelled.

My bank refunded a direct debit payment taken by Setanta and cancelled the direct debit mandate, after I showed them evidence that Setanta had overcharged me and had failed to correct the account after I had contacted them.

I took the initiative of contacting Setanta, who wiped the erroneous debt, but then rang 6 times and wrote once, demanding the "outstanding balance", which they then conceded was NIL!

Then, the system auto-cancelled the subscription and encrypted the channels.

It seems that they are over-reliant on automated systems that don't recognize subsequent account changes.

What's the point in responding to Setanta's demands, and resolving problems with them, if the system just goes on demanding payment after the "debt" no longer exists and cancels the subscription?

I ordered Setanta Sports yesterday (1st December) just to watch the Liverpool vs West Ham Match. I sent an email the same day to cancel my Setanta Subscription as i dont require it no more. How long does it take for them to actually confirm that it will be cancelled?

Don't hold your breath while you are waiting.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

you will have it for 2 months
its 30days from your next billing date unless you cancel it few days before your billing date if you want it to be 30 days notice!

• This may be of interest to you guys.

I cancelled my Setanta subscription yesterday by email having originally signed up using the Daily Mirror offer 11 days ago. As of yet I've not received a confirmation email of the cancellation but later in day received an email from them with the subject as 'Stay in with Setanta this winter and the get the big names and the big games'.

I don't know if this some sort of cryptic email drawing my attention to the terms and conditions of cancellation or just some advertising bumf.

Stated in the email is this :-

As per the Terms & Conditions of this offer, you must notify us between the 10th and 30th day of your subscription should you NOT wish to continue by calling 08712 00 33 22 and quoting "Reader Offer". If you do not contact us within this timeframe you will automatically move onto our standard billing.

Further along in the email is says this :-

To cancel prior to the end of the first 2 months, write or email between the 10th and 30th days of your subscription (full details of how to cancel will be sent to you when you sign up).

What makes this interesting is that I always thought that you couldn't cancel by phone, only by email or letter.

I think I'll ring them tonight and see what's going on
• Well the saga of my attempt to get rid of these guys has been going on for over 2 months, see my first post of 17/11/08 but I have finally managed to get my subscription cancelled!!!!

Got a phone call during the week from their customer services team, yes they really do have one, saying that they have decided to clear all outstanding debts and cancel my subscription with nothing more to pay, WOW! Have today received a letter confirming, but only because I insisted.

Just goes to show that you shouldn't let these cowboys get to you. Keep copies of everything you send them, and notes of any phone calls including dates and times so they can replay them if necessary. I had to send a registered letter to get anywhere but at least that escapade is now over and I feel that it is a small victory for me at least.

Good luck with your cancellations and remember NEVER recommend them to anyone, unless you really hate them of course!

Happy New Year to all, might have acelebratory drink tonight!
• I took advantage of the 3 months half price deal a couple of months back, I sent an email to Setanta a couple of days back advising that I wish to give 30 days notice on my account (as I don't wish to pay full price), had an email from theuir customer service this morning (yes, 1st January!) stating the following"Thank you for your e-mail.

I am sorry to hear that you wish to cancel your subscription with Setanta Sports. However, I can confirm that your request will be processed and your subscription will be terminated 30 days from your next billing date."

After having setanta on a similar offer last year at the same time, and having experienced a very smooth cancellation priocess, I am beginning to think I am blessed having seen all the feedback posted on here! My personal experience is that Setanta have been good, maybe I have just been lucky.

Hi foxy,
I'm the same, had no troubles at all with cancelling. I even had a phone call during my cancellation period offering me 3 months half price with no contract so I signed back up. Been very impressed with them so far, perhaps we have just been lucky, long may it continue!

Me too but playing it cool as they're phoning back later in January, they also offered me free connection.

I called to cancel 6 months ago when they bumped the premium from £9.99 to £12.99. Setanta offered me £7.50 x 6 months to stay...now that this offer is expiring and I am resorting to full price what are the chances of getting a similar deal ( are Setanta still chasing market share at all costs and offering such "retainer" deals which were routinely offered 6 months back ) ?
