i had the usual 30 days from your next billing date speel, that was in october, the last payment was 6th of november.( they cut me off 5 times when trying to cancel!)

setanta admitted i should have had my subscription cancelled 30 days later but they didnt, they just had to start the procedure again.

they continued to take two payments in december and january so i decided to contact halifax (my credit card company) and because it was effectively their money they were very helpful. i had to send a copy of the emails to them and they would deal with the cancelation. (i also sent the same info to the DEPARTMENT OF WORKING STANDARDS)

when i rang setanta today about a refund, as soon as i gave my acc number they put me through to a manager in cancellations who sanctioned a refund whilst on the phone! this maybe to good to be true but i think a note must have been logged that halifax had made a complaint on my behalf who knows!

anyway i think if your subscribed to this two-bit company but pay by credit card, you have alot more power than when they are STEALING from your personal account.
  • I joined Setanta online on Saturday.

    1) I want to know the earliest I can place my 30 days notice?

    2) I tryed to sign up using my credit card online, the website said I could not do this. Now I have been charged twice on my credit card of 21.49 x 2.

    3) I then set up an direct debit through my bank which has yet to come out.

    4) How on earth do I get my credit card refunded back?

Any help on going about this in the most time free stress free manner

I cancelled my direct debit for Setanat a couple of days ago. Today I have received a text message asking me to call them. The lady on customer services just "told me off" for cancelling in the wrong way! She said that because I havent givem them 30 days notice they can still ask me for the money - is that correct?
  • I too am having a nightmare getting a refund from Setanta.

I had an annual subscription with Setanta Sports, which I cancelled via email and received back an email confirmation of this. A week or so later, Setanta phoned and asked me to return on a monthly contract, at a reduced cost of £7.50 per month for 3 months.

I accepted this offer, being happier with the reduced price and also being able cancel with a month's notice.

Sadly, Setanta have taken the full annual subscription rate of £155.88 out of my account. I have phoned to get a refund and was told that a refunds department will contact me in a few days, processing my refund. They would also extend the reduced subscription rate period from 3 to 6 months to make up for their error.

Having not heard from the refund department, I phoned and spoke a rep called Ashton to confirm action had been taken. She informed me a refund had been approved of a total of £122.98. I pointed out that the figure was wrong as Setanta had taken 155.88. The reason I was given was that they had deducted payment for next 6 months.

I told them these sums didn't add up at all and I hadn't agreed to any such payment method. The representative put me on hold to go and check again the reason. She returned and confirmed I will receive a refund of £155.88 minus the cost of £7.50 for this month' viewing. However, the refund could take up to 7-10 days to process. I wasn't too happy with this and asked the customer service rep if Setanta would pay any bank charges that may result. The Rep confirmed that Setanta would indeed pay any bank charges that I may incur due to a lack of funds in my account.

I was content to leave the matter at that, glad to at least be getting my money back. I also decided to email Setanta to ask them to confirm what was happening.

Today, I noticed that Setanta had then taken a further £7.50 out of my bank account. I decided to phone Setanta again to find out what was going on. I spoke to a Representative called Denise. She told me that the £7.50 was payment for my month's viewing as part of the deal I was offered. I explained my previous conversation with Setanta as detailed above. She said that she will look into the problem but there was nothing she could do. She also stated that the refund will now take up to 28 days.

I asked why I was being told different information every time I phoned the company. Initially it was a few days, then 7-10 days, now 28 days. Denise said I had been misinformed. I asked to speak to a supervisor as I staggered at such an attitude and also the fact that the refund will now take 28 days. I also wanted to know why I was being told different info every time I phoned. I was placed on hold and then cut off.

I phoned straight back and had to explain the whole problem again. The Customer Service Rep offered to re-fill the refund claim in for me. I rejected this as going straight back to the beginning and wouldn't answer my queries. This actually made me worry as to whether any attempt to refund me had actually been attempted. I again re-stated my wish to speak to someone in a more senior capacity.

I was transfered to a supervisor called Mani. He said he couldn't comment on why I was being told different information by different Reps. I pointed out that this wasn't a small amount of money and it was severly effecting my life and needed the money asap. He apologised and when I again asked about the bank charge liability, he confirmed that Setanta WON'T pay for any bank charges incurred, despite what I had previously been told.

I expressed my disbelief that a company could operate like this and blatantly lie to customers. I also told him that I couldn't afford to be without this money for such a long period. He apologised but said I actually had a great deal in having Setanta at a reduced rate for a period of 6 months and MOST of my money would be refunded.

I asked Mani if he could phone up whatever the necessary department was to hurry the process up as I was desperate. He said he would do so and would phone me back. I treble checked my number with him and asked if he personally will phone me. He said he would but I seriously doubt he or anyone else will.

I would really appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

I am going to send the following via email...

"I am writing to cancel my subscription to Setanta and confirm that my 30 days notice begins today, 22nd January 2009. I have requested a receipt from my email client to authenticate the time this email reaches you."

I will also include my name, address, phone number and account number in this email.

  • That's all we put in and ..

Hopefully it's gone well for us cancelling setanta. Sent original email on 2nd Jan (before this months payment) giving notice. Heard nothing. Resent the email on 11th Jan (after this months payment) and had email on 17th, saying cancellation request successful and we will be terminated on 30th January. So fingers crossed that's it (and they don't take money next month, unfortunately DH put it on his card rather than DD, so we can't cancel it with out getting new card reissued)
    2009 total raised £2373.60:j
the new garden beat me in 2010 just £1306.66:o

I called to cancel Sentanta, the rep said that was ok but I had to do it by email too which I did. No reply from that though, so a couple of days later I cancelled my direct debit anyway.

I have since been inundated by calls and messages telling me to call them because of an emergency !! In my profession an emergency is defined by a life threatening event such as cardiac arrest or profound haemorrhage - not a TV subscription event.

When they did call and I picked up, they insisted on running through some 'security questions' which I refused to comply with until they would tell me what the call was about, they said they couldn't tell me what it was about until I'd successfully completed their security questions.

I declined unless they could explain the nature of their call.

This went on several times until he swore at me and hung up !

    I await letters now ...

I am officially sick of Setanta Sports!

I sent my first email request on November 5th 2008 (payment date is 15th) so I naturally expected my cut off date to be January 15th because I forgot they had reduced it to 30 days notice.

2 months subscription has since come out of my account. I rang to ask them why and they told me they hadn't received my email which is a pretty convenient thing to say despite the email still being in my sent box. I played holy hell with them on the phone and I was asked to resend the email.

That was after I was told of their "mega" customer deals (mackems words) - all of which I had heard before and weren't exactly my idea of mega! Deals were £9.99/month for 12 months or half price for 6 months.

Anyway, after repeating my details and email address several times, I said I wanted to speak to a manager to get a refund for the money I had paid extra and was told that I had to write to their head office as well as request cancellation by email.

Email was sent and I received a reply today giving the usual "we're sorry your leaving us" speel but they also put that I will be disconnected 30 days from my next billing date which is now 15th Feb....meaning I now have to wait until March 2009!!!

    Not happy!

I contacted my bank to ask them to cancel the direct debit and was told at first that there wasn't one in place meaning that the only explanation would be that I signed up by card over the phone which I don't remember doing.

Then I got a letter from my bank saying that after an "extensive" search into my direct debits (didn't realise I had that many haha), they found one for £12.99 made payable to Automatic Alarms, which for some strange reason turns out to be Setanta Sports. They have said they will now cancel it on their end.

If I get any calls from them about debt collection agencies or the like I will go light!
