I won't bore you with the details of the hassle I have had with Setanta because it has been more than covered........try this alternative to the 0870 number.......................0191 501 3482
It has worked everytime for me....0 -
dont know about problems to cancel, ive had an headache to subscribe!
already have setanta and wanted it on the multiroom for £2.99 extra,
i saw an ad for 1st 2 months free.
thought id sorted it saturday, but no picture come tuesday,
called them again and they said there must have been an error and said he'd send the signal again, but nothing,
another call later, he asked for my viewing card again and it was completely different to both my cards,
gave them it again and he said because id had setanta in the past on the card, (when it was a £1, i put both on and cancelled 1)
i cant have it again on and id need to either get sky to unblock it or send me a new one????
sky said they didn't have a clue what they're on about and to take it up with setanta, fair enough too.
got post today and a new sky card came, with what im sure was the number they thought id gave them in the 1st place,
all i can think is that setanta issued the card on the saturday because there's no way a call made at 5pm yesterday can result in a new card on my doormat at 11am the next day...im puzzled!
decided against the multi sub now because of the cancellation policy, but they did alter my current subs by half for 3 months when i !!!!!ed to them and threatened to cancel0 -
I was listening to a phone-in on the radio this morning ("Five Live") which was all about Setanta and backed up everything mentioned on here so far. The Setanta rep couldn't really justify the company's position either beyond using all the usual clich!s about "lessons being learned". He almost seemed to be passing it off as incompetence rather than anything deliberate but was given a rough time by both the presenter and listeners. One useful thing he did confirm though was that the address to write to is the Co. Down one.
The Sunderland address is therefore a red herring in my opinion, designed purely to waste more of everyone's time and further stall their cancellation date!
Cheers.

hiyas, i posted this earlier but theres been so many posts since then,,,, i was aking if anyone was in the same predicament as we are,, we had satanta for the 3 months offer back in january i think, cancelled it after the offer, no £ taken from bank account (used debit card to pay over the phone) weve still got setanta, no £ taken out... whats going on??
b/f rekons we should keep it quiet but im worried setanta will realise weve still got it, will be able to tell weve been watching it and bill us accordingly!

on 22/07/08 I attempted to cancel Setanta by email due to unwatchable viewing quality.
Got an email from them which states quite clearly that cancellations can be done by phone. (not by email which fair enough).
I rang, and held, then held some more, then got through to human, then was transferred, and put on hold. So I held a while more and got a nice lady in cancellations dept.
She was very understanding and said I could have the service for £7.50 a month for next 6 months (instead of £12.99) as compensation for poor service. The signal was resent and the picture quality was fine………………. For 2 weeks then it started getting bad again.
Then came the 10/08/08 and the FULL amount of £12.99 was taken by direct debit.
So I rang again to cancel due to breach of verbal contract which promised to charge me £7.50 … and held, etc, etc…………………… after about 40 minutes I was FINALLY told that cancellations could only be done IN WRITING, despite the contents of THEIR OWN EMAIL.
I told them to cancel as they had breached the verbal contract to charge me £7.50. Also told them they wouldn’t be getting more money for an unwatchable service and the breach of verbal contract.
The direct debit was then cancelled on the 11/08/08.
I followed this with a recorded delivery letter sent on 22/08/08. Put in writing due to several more emails saying I cant cancel by email or phone.
TODAY, the 12/09/08 Setanta have taken the £12.99 from another of my bank accounts WHICH NEVER HAD THE DIRECT DEBIT MANDATE SET UP on it.
They only got the details of that account as they refused to put me through to cancellations, when I originally rang, unless I gave them a ‘means of payment’ as they called it. The details of my second account were the ones nearest to hand at the time. Although why they can demand sensitive info like that over the phone is beyond me.
So they have took it upon themselves to setup a direct debit on my sole account. WITHOUT INFORMING ME. I rang RBS online fraud and they have confirmed that I have never setup the DD and have refunded my £12.99 (yep, STILL trying to take the full amount instead of £7.50 as promised).
How can a supposedly professional company commit FRAUD like this?
Do they think they are above the law and can ride roughshod over the consumer?
Its easy enough to apply for Setanta by email or online…so WHY THE HELL IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO CANCEL?
It should be as easy to cancel as it is to apply for the service.0 -
re method of cancellation: EXTRACT FROM EMAIL SENT TO ME BY CUSTOMER SERVICES AT SETANTA :''
cancellations can be carried out after the first months subscription with a minimum period of 60 days cancellation notice either by calling the Customer Services team on 08712 003322 between 9am and 9pm, seven days a week or in writing.
All cancellation requests being made in writing are to be sent to the following address:
Setanta Sports
Department 8544
Sunderland
SR9 9XZ''
sent on 22/07/08 - -notice the fact they say i can PHONE? just try it
Also still peddling the Sunderland address. But I suppose if you follow their instructions and write to Sunderland then there's sod all they can argue about.0 -
Excellent!!! One other point that I would mention, as you say, when you call you get put through to "cancellations". I held for 30 mins for "cancellations" and then gave up, but I already indicated to the call centre person that I intended to cancel. They also sent me a dated letter saying don't go which makes it clear to me they knew I was cancelling.
If you can't cancel by phone why have they got a cancellation department? Also it's clear the cancellation department is a con, because you hold for 3 minutes to talk to CS but surprise, cancellations is "exceptionally busy" on their 0871 number!
I posted this on DS but it's worth saying here - the fella from setanta on five live said the problems were a small proportion of their 1 million customers, but by definition only a small proportion of them will be trying to cancel (or maybe that's why it's so hard, all 1 million are still trying?)0 -
its just been on radio 5live that because of pressure from them Satanta will be reducing their cancellation time to 30 days just caught the end of it and for some reason I cant get into the BBC site to check.0

I had asked about this, because it was 30 days when I signed up to Setanta, so asked why they are now demanding 60 days. About 2 minutes ago I received this reply to my email.
From the 1st of July when the price increased from £9.99 to £12.99 the notice period also increased to 60 days.0 -
Well, that's further confirmation that we're dealing with an unscrupulous bunch of cowboys then!
Eslick, what you say is great news BUT of purely academic value if you cannot get Setanta to admit to having received your cancellation letter!!!
I have now written to Fife, County Down and Sunderland but they will only activate the 30/60 days notice period from when the claim to have received it. Getting them to acknowledge this is the hard part!
Cheers.
