Don't know if this really works or not - but I guess you're willing to try anything?

My daughter is really phobic about spiders (I catch them in a glass and throw them at end of garden - she just wants them all dead!)

So... I read somewhere that spiders don't like lavender. DD now has a bedroom full of lavender smellies - sachets/candles/incence sticks. Although we regularly get spiders in all other rooms of the house, I can't remember the last time she screamed for me to remove one from her room.

DD's convinced it's the lavender doing the job and wants to have lavender smellies all over the house, unfortunatley I can't stand the smell & would rather have the spiders!

That's an interesting idea, thanks. Perhaps I'll leave sachets of it around skirting boards and see if it makes a difference. I'll give it a go!

I don't know if this will help at all, but my ex had a huge fear of spiders, and a friend of his bought him a spider scarer. It was this small plug in box that was meant to emit a high pitched noise that scares spiders (and other insects) away. Humans can't hear it, and apparently it doesn't effect dogs or cats if you have them as pets. Only thing is they bought it over in America, and although I've kept a look out I've never been able to find one over here. If anyone knows where to get their hands on one please let me know. I hate spiders too and would love to have a spider free home.

I heard on the radio that if you put conkers in your room it stops the spiders. Not sure if it is the conker or the casing or both. Anyway I used this method last autumn and it seemed to work.

I too am a little phobic - get all hot and bothered so sympathise, but think what they are doing, they are hunting. So do you have a bug problem...please don't take offence! But they do hunt to eat. The big ones don't spin webs. They breed in Autumn. So maybe you have an underlying problem.

Far be it from me to advocate housework when not necessary, but if it was me, I would do a really, really thorough spring clean - behind everything and then look to the lavender idea ( I will try this myself, thanks Jailhousebabe) and in the Autumn try the conkers as well.

Failing all of this, contact the the insect people at your local council, they may help.

But please, please don't kill them! They are really important to the eco system. Put them out by using the cup/card method.

    Good luck!

The big ones in my house are way too big to get into a cup!

    Hiya

We get loads too and I'm arachnaphobic! I've found that they hate flea spray. I know it's not very environment friendly but I spray around the corners and door frames once every couple of months. It does seem to keep them out. They also dislike horse chestnut (hence the conkers in tw0906blue's post) and I did find in a catalouge like cleeneze a horse chestnut spray.
    I would if I could but I can't so I won't!

If your getting that many it sounds like you have a nest somewhere. I hate them too and I'm looking on the floor all evening making sure there are none there. I'll try all the tips you mentioned.

There is a spray in a shop in my town centre called 'Spider repellant spray'. Its in one of those cheapy shops that always have loads of plastic boxes outside. I think it's £1.99 for the bottle. I havn't tried it yet but it would be worth a go.

Thanks to everyone who posted here with suggestions. I think I am going to try them all! I am going to have a thorough spring clean, look for holes around skirtings etc on my hands and knees and block up if necessary. Then, as I found some flea spray at the back of the cupboard, I'm going to spray that around the edges of the room.

Then I will go shopping for lavender thingies at some point, and also get my son to pick up conkers come Autumn!

I will post back here in a few weeks time and let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again. Fingers crossed

You sound like you live in my house - since I moved to the countryside they have been terrorising me. The whole house needs decorating and there is loads of nooks and crannies to make matters worse.

The flea spray that you can get from the vets definately works - though make sure you have more than 1 can - I started spraying my office and the aerosol broke so I couldnt do any more rooms - bad mistake as I sat down in the next room I watched them all migrating from my office. Sadly it is a real phobia and I feel sick just thinking that one might be near me.

Anyway this seems to be the time of year I start to notice them so I am going to buy one of those ultrasonic devices when I have some spare cash - there is a few on the market so think I will try the 'I wanna' board to see if anyone has had any experience.
In the meantime as other posters have said I keep on top of the hoovering and make sure I do underneath things and in the corners etc.

If I see one I cant even get near enough to hit it but luckily DS (7) is getting much braver and will place a glass over it till OH can get home & remove it.

By the way dont know if its an old wives tale but I have been told if you just pu them outside the house they will come straight back in - so OH has to walk down the road and put then outside my neighbours house!

NB Will also try lavendar although I dont like the smell if it works it will be worth it.

You all have my sympathy, as I do not know what I would do faced with constant spiders. I only have to see one in my room and I go all funny, and like essex-girl I cannot go near them, even to suck them up with the hoover.

I have lost count how many times I have shouted at OH for laughing at me when I start to panic when he will not get it! :o

Thanks for the tips re lavender, I dont care for the smell too much but Id rather that than those horrid little ( or big) things scuttling around!

OOh, Ive gone all funny just thinking about them! _pale_
