Hermia you didn't go on the same course as me did you, the one London Zoo runs?

I went on that because I was really really bad. I came out of it letting brown hairy s*ds run over my hands and holding a tarantula and I was fine for a while.

But my confidence has ebbed away again now and I can't deal with the really big awful ones at all. I am fine with the smaller ones which is progress, but the fear has come back.

Hi, I wonder if anyone has any ideas for getting rid of household spiders please?

I moved into my ground floor flat 4 and a half years ago and every Autumn (usually end-Aug to end November) I have spiders - big, whopping, huge, brown spiders! And loads of them - last year I killed 22 of them in the space of 3 months. I've lived in about 14 different houses/flats in my lifetime and I have never experienced a place like it for them.

I know this wouldn't be a problem for some people, but I have been phobic about spiders since childhood. To some degree I have reduced my fear a little, years ago I wouldn't have gone into a room with a spider, now I go right up to them and whap them one with a slipper/magazine!

Anyway, last Autumn I caught 2 at the same time coming out of a small hole near a plug socket. So I plugged the hole and all the other holes that I could see around skirting boards in the flat - and I didn't have another spider that Autumn.

I thought I had solved the problem! However, rather peculiarly in the last 5 weeks I've had 5 massive ones - different rooms, different places. This really bothers me - I never have had them this time of year, at least in Autumn I psyche myself up for them and I know they'll be gone soon. But now I am panicking that I am going to get them all year round. I really cannot put up with this. My 10 year old son hates them too. A couple of times they have been in his bed. You can be sitting on the settee and one will crawl up right next to you. We are both living on tenterhooks and its an unpleasant way to live.

Please, please, please - does anyone have any advice on how to prevent them? I've put this in the moneysaving old style bit because if there are any homemade or cheapie ways of helping eliminate them then great, but to be truthful I'd spend anything just to get rid of them!

If not, I think I will have to move to another flat, one that's definitely not on the ground floor.

    Please help!

I have the same problem. Huge spiders from spring to winter, at least one a day (varying in size) :(

That's awful. Out of interest are you in a ground floor flat? Or if you're in a house, do you find them mainly on the ground floor level?

I am in a house. I find them all over ranging in size from medium to hude! Downstairs, in the bedroom, in the bathroom on my towels  (not the huge ones on the towels though)

My house spider is called FRED, he lives in a crack between the fireplace and skirting board and is about the 10th generation of the original FRED from over 20 years ago. He is nearly the width of my hand across his legs and casts a MONSTER shadow in the light from the TV !

I never kill spiders allthough I will remove the most conspicuous webs, prefering to have spiders instead of flies .

Don't know if this really works or not - but I guess you're willing to try anything?

My daughter is really phobic about spiders (I catch them in a glass and throw them at end of garden - she just wants them all dead!)

So... I read somewhere that spiders don't like lavender. DD now has a bedroom full of lavender smellies - sachets/candles/incence sticks. Although we regularly get spiders in all other rooms of the house, I can't remember the last time she screamed for me to remove one from her room.

DD's convinced it's the lavender doing the job and wants to have lavender smellies all over the house, unfortunatley I can't stand the smell & would rather have the spiders!
some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it :)
