Omg the story about spiders running on your head at night, thats me never sleeping again then!

Whilst there was just me and the children living at home, I had to be brave and get them out of the house. We got a system going where I get them on the sweeping brush, my daughter opens a big window, and the brush and spider are lobbed out at speed while we jump about going 'ewwww'

OH was in the toilet this morning reading his paper :p next minute I heard alot of bad swearing(wot the ****, die bas**** die, you big bas**** etc etc-along with loud banging  ) im thinking-what the hell is he doing on there..lol...anyways he comes out quite quickly..still swearing...and showing me this tarantula(medium size spider to you or me..lol) in a piece of tissue!! He told me that he was sat on the bog minding his own business and this tarantula crawled under the door and ran straight at him :rotfl: I nearly peed myself laughing :D Husband said "lucky i was sitting on the toilet as I nearly shat myself"

I couldnt believe he had made so much fuss over a spider and it wasnt that big but was very black and hairy though  He doesnt normally swear much either, but think he has made up for the last few years in a matter of minutes

I have found those little vacumn things they sell to be useless. They don't have enough 'oomph' and the little buggers just cling on. Hairspray is a classic of course (has to be the nasty cheap stuff and you need to give them a good spray with it). I went on this course to cure my spider phobia and the guy who ran it said death by hairspray was always a popular choice!

I agree with death by hairspray, but i tend to take it a little further, by spraying it through an open flame.

    Portable flame thrower.

V good for the ones that think if they hide in the corner of the ceiling you won't find them.. though I should point out that you can't get rid of the scorch marks unless you paint over them! :p

I should point out I am seriously phobic of them, and am sat at my desk which happens to be under the attic hatch. Oh joy. One abseiled down in front of my face the other week...

in boots they have a nifty little gadget designed to hoover them up (safely i think) in a little pink flower shaped vac, collect them in a cup attatched to the end and let them out wherever you like! thinking of getting one myself , suppose it works with all creepy crawlies if you can catch them!

you can get one from lakeland ltd that looks less girly. just blue handle, no flowers, spider hoover. mine has had the same batteries in it for 3 years, is used regularly, and is still going strong. however, i do not let them out. i keep them in the hoover until i am certain that they are dead, or else they'll come back and get me...

I have no fear of spiders at all. I tend to let them be if they are small, but if I see a spiderweb, up the hoover it goes. The very large ones I catch in a glass and release outside. If they come back I just do it again.

Once there was a particularly elegant one, very long legs, and I allowed it to crawl up my arm and neck. It gave me a delicate, ever so little tickle.

Please don't go all  ! Spiders are useful little creatures (don't know in what way though :D ) and have their own place in nature.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

We live in an 80 yr old house so it has lots of gaps in the floorboards etc so no chance of stopping them getting in, even if we wanted. :(

Last year, I remember seeing a spidey in a corner of the room (ceiling) I couldn't reach it so I left it - couldn't be bothered to get the vac attachments out. Then I noticed a small brown fluffy lump there, thought spidey had gone so left it (still couldn't be bothered with vac and attachments - lazy, huh?) One day, I came into the dining room and noticed lots of webs on my light fitting, so went and got vac out. Then I noticed lots of webs everywhere - and lots of little black dots that were running around the ceiling. That fluffy lump must have been the spidey nest and overnight they had all hatched  I spent days vac-ing the ceiling, curtains, light fittings :D

Then, the other week when I was decorating the kitchen I noticed another spidey had taken up residence in the corner near the back door. I scooped it up and put it outside, went on to paint room. Next day - IT WAS BACK. I'm sure it was the same one - same size, same colour, same corner. I've left it cos it doesn't do anything - just sits in the corner. No webs, no mess, probably just eats the little fruit flies that come in the back door, so doing me a favour :D It's like a pet - but if it decides to move - it's a gonner!!
  • not sure if this is too off thread - but TM you just mentioned fruit flies

i am swarmed with them at the moment
    anyone else noticed this?
    is it the mild weather?
i was starting to think my bag of potatoes was infested.

as for spiders - i am scared stiffof he horible things
was never too bad till my sister had a boyfriend who would pick them up and throw them at me

im actually scared to go tobed tonight in case one crawls over my head- i sleep with my mouth open LOL

S'Ok brokenwings - I've just googled it and the swallowing spiders in your sleep is a myth. Most people don't swallow any - I just read a whole blurb about why you wouldn't. (Arthropods run away from breath, for one thing :D)
