It can be expensive but since a few people have mentioned horse chestnut and it's not conker season and also some have said they dislike the smell of lavendar, Badedas contains extract of horse chestnut. Don't know if you'd need to leave full bottle unopened or a near empty bottle lying about.0

flea spray/powder works,it kills all little creatures,it usualy lasts for ages after using,so if your really wanting to completely rid yourself of them,it might be a good way to do it.If you spray round the windowss and bottoms of doors, this would also discourage them from coming in,also kills wasps that come in and terrorise!
I don't like to kill little creatures, and don't like using these sorts of products, but if there disturbing how comfortable you are in your own home, maybe you have to weigh it up for yourself.I cant stand spiders, but do take in to consideration that they are "goodies" in the world of creepy crawlies,I try to tolerate them, but I do shout my partner to move them for me if they're bothering me! and if he's out I do ocasionaly hoover them.We had a horrible summer once when the house was flea infested, and used the flea spray,I was amazed at the amount of bugs I kept finding dead all over the place!(we do live in an old draughty place in the middle of a huge garden,in the countryside, though,we not just filthy!)0 -
i opened one of our floor level kitchen cupboards the other day, and a spider scurried out from somewhere (dont know if he had been in the cupboard).
on my life, this spider was about the size of a tarrantula...i screamed, dropped the dish i was holding and literally jumped up the step into the dining room. i think poor OH nearly died of shock before coming to my rescue.
said spider is now swimming down the river taff somewhere (sorry spider-friendly people, but if you aint paying rent, you dont stay...and hell can freeze over before i risk waking up to find him sat on the pillow staring at me  )
the trouble is, i cant get rid of that horrible creepy crawly itch (the one you get whenever anyone mentions cockroaches/headlice/spiders) and to make things worse, i am now looking out for them in every nook and cranny in uncontrollable acts of obsessive compulsive paranoia :rotfl:

LouJ wrote:I don't know if this will help at all, but my ex had a huge fear of spiders, and a friend of his bought him a spider scarer. It was this small plug in box that was meant to emit a high pitched noise that scares spiders (and other insects) away. Humans can't hear it, and apparently it doesn't effect dogs or cats if you have them as pets. Only thing is they bought it over in America, and although I've kept a look out I've never been able to find one over here. If anyone knows where to get their hands on one please let me know. I hate spiders too and would love to have a spider free home.
Have a look at the PestXit Ultra here, you can then buy it on this site. It is £24.99 but gets rid or lots of pests including spiders / rats / mice etc. I have just ordered one as we saw a mouse in the kitchen on saturday
Can't personally recommend it but there is another thread here that seems to support these types of products

Thanks for everyone's support and advice. I feel a little silly at being so creeped out by them, but i can see from the number of posts here that I'm definitely not alone!
I know that logically they do keep the house clear of bugs etc etc, but I just wish they'd leave my house alone!
I'll report back in a few weeks time and let everyone know what worked for me.0 -
My parents house gets HUUUUUUUUUGE momma spiders in the autumn too. I couldnt sleep at night until I had got one, because I just *knew* they were there.... it's one of the reasons why I sleep with the light on if I'm ever visiting home0

I could have started this thread a few years ago and those of you with spider phobias have my full sympathies. I too am completely phobic about them and am sorry but they HAVE to go, no matter what. I've noticed they go on the march outdoors around may and will come back in again if storms are on the way or rain. I don't like the idea of killing anything and know my anti-spider campaigns do just this - its me or them tho'.
I have been known to knock on strangers doors to come and get spiders for me, have slept in the car with my dog because an enormous spider (hertfordshire black) was striding back and forth across the house and front door and I was terrified it would slip inside whilst I was fetching things in too. I have put the hoover running outside for up to an hour to ensure it can't get out again (and have even sucked up small stones hoping they will knock them out and sprayed up the nozzle with fly spray to double "do them" inside the hoover at the height of my phobia). I won't tell you anymore for fear of the men in white coats. I was offered hypnotism by a friend who deals with phobias but couldn't face the idea that they would make me have to confront this fear!
I do not allow clutter to gather nor place furniture fully into corners. I've used sealers and pollyfilla to seal all gaps in skirtings, around door frames etc. I use long lasting flea killers over all areas of carpeted floors especially corners, doorways window frames etc. I use Dethlac around outside doors which acts in the same way. I regularly sweep around door and window frames. I shut all doors and windows before dusk no matter how hot it is too. Nor do I have plants growing against the house.
I've heard about conkers but my strategically placed ones were gleefully taken by my son for his own personal pleasures so can't say if they work  . They do not like clover oil either and I bought a spray called spider stop from a betterware agent which is a mix of natural chestnut extract and clover leaf oil. I can't think of any more things I do right now ... I've spent too long thinking about them as it is, but if anything else springs to mind, I will be back!0 -
I suppose logically the flea spray would work as it is an insecticide afterall. I will give that a go.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Do you get daddy long-legs in your house? Also called Cellar Spiders.
Here's a pic: http://www.uky.edu/Ag/CritterFiles/casefile/spiders/cellar/cellar.htm#longbodied
We get quite a few of these and I try to leave them be when I come across them because they tend to stay out of the way and they provide a very useful service - they eat the much scarier house spiders (Tegenaria types)! So, if you can be brave enough to leave a few cellar spiders around the place, that might help some.
What a lot of people don't realise about the Tegenaria spiders (I am 99% certain that if you look for a picture of a Tegenaria you'll find that this is the one that makes most people scream!) is that they don't 'come in' - they are indoor spiders, so only blocking the gaps to outdoors won't solve this problem.
I can't help much beyond that, however, since I'm trying to cope with a phobia myself, and after many hours spent researching prevention methods I've decided that my phobia is what needs to be treated - rather than the presence of spiders, which I don't think is ever going to go away!
In the meantime, I use (or rather DH uses) one of these - http://www.spidercatcher.net/ You even get a plastic spider to practice with - it's just a shame that real spiders aren't so docile!Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0
