All these posts have made me smile ;) We are all quivering about these little creatures. Even if they do run at a 100 miles an hour!

Living in the country does it, my sister lived in a thatched cottage once and she said it was dreadful for spiders etc. I guess we never think of those sorts of things when we see a cottage we fall in love with!

I am lucky cos tho I don't like spiders, we don't have too many.

We did encounter one the sixe of a man's hand in Spain...our son screamed (about 10 years old) as it was on his bedroom wall. OH dropped it under the bed when valliently trying to get it into a basin to get it outside. I was out of the room! It disappeared though, and our son, now 25, still doesn't know! Bet it crawled over me or OH. Shudder!

Anyway. Chestnut is it that they don't like? Well I shall try that. Lavender will be used as well. I don't even mind the smell so bonus.

Oh, and I have been told that putting house spiders outside kills them anyway...so I have done my fair share of exterminating!

Good luck all, but try and remember, they are really important in the eco system.

Well, I'm back!! This talk of spiders seems to have woken them up in my house! It was there above the door frame last night in my bedroom in the wee small hours - - but I was very good and the neighbours stayed asleep! :D

Mad as it sounds, I keep cans of fly spray in strategic points around the house with my theory being that if I blind it with the spray first, it is less likely to belt off - I lose it completely when they run. No further details neccessary ..... I won!

Hermia - I think you are very brave to hold a taratula. The bloke who was willing to hypnotise me has worked with Paul McKenna and they do some kind of cognitive thing too, but even that wasn't enough to convince me to try it.

There is just NO WAY I could use one of those spider catcher things let alone a glass to get them with. I cannot afford one of those electronic repeller things (hmmmm .. maybe a bit more money saving needed ready for next year??!!) so have bought a packet of lavendar seeds instead. I've also heard recently that lavendar makes good moth repellent too. If all goes to plan, everyone will be getting home made lavendar pouches for christmas and I'll be spider and moth free. :rotfl:

I have been known to knock on strangers doors to come and get spiders for me,

That made me laugh! I confess one time I asked the postman to get rid of one, but he couldn't deal with it either because it was so big and creepy looking! So the postman went outside and grabbed a road sweeper who just happened to be outside at the time. Luckily he wasn't bothered by spiders and managed to kill it.

I must admit I do hate to kill them as much as I hate them. I realise they are one of god's creatures and keep the bug population down. But its funny because I have no problem with mice, rats, snakes. I suppose one person's phobia is another person's love/hobby.
  • I feel physically sick reading all about spiders. I have a terrible phobia of them and can totally relate to lots of the posts on here. I have been sobbing on my landing at 3am before now because a big one has been on my bedroom wall. I've also begged my neighbour to come and remove one. I can't even use those spider catchers with handles because I am terrified it will run and I will miss catching it. Why do they have to move so fast :o

I totally live in fear of them and I know it's ridiculous but I can't help it. I am definitely going to try some of the tips on here and hope they work. Luckily we don't have too many but I still live in fear that one is going to appear in my house.

I know they are good for the eco system but they are rubbish for my own personal fear factor :o

The OP has my utmost sympathy and I really hope some of these tips work for you.

MY spider catcher has arrived!!!:j have tried it out with the plastic spider - not a good idea on a laminate floor as when you loose the spider go it appears to run across the floor in a very lifelike manner! but the actual catcher is brilliant - my only misgiving is that it could do with a longer handle as you have to get quite close to the spider:eek: but I will be brave and give it a go (DS2 will be my stand by if its too much for me!:o )

All I need now is a spider!!! (not!)

I hope this link to about.com is ok to use on the site but if it isn't, can the mods let me know please and I'll delete the post.

I've signed up to the frugal living pages of about.com and have come across this page explaining how to help get rid of spiders both frugally and in ways that do not harm other crawlies. There are some tips not previously mentioned on this thread I think and if you wish, you could follow the other links on the page to rid yourself of flies too!

    this is the link

I have a spider catcher...it's called my OH :rotfl: He has no problem picking them up (with his bare hands  ) and dropping them out the window or throwing them out the door. He just complains when they move as it tickles him  I can generally cope with the smaller ones (ones whose leg span is no greater than a 50p) by using a glass.

Even OH won't pick big ones up but at least he can cope with catching those ones in a glass with a bit of card whereas I'm likely to try and put a cardboard box over it, with a weight on top and leave it until he comes in :o

Last week I was sorting out the washing and picked up a towel I had just used after my bath and this BIG spider fell out of it and into the laundry basket. The binmen outside wondered what the scream was :o Fortunately the back door was open and I somehow managed to put it out myself into the garden at arms length and ready to drop the basket should the spider have moved :rotfl:

We had another smaller one on Sunday on the kitchen floor and while I was opening the window for OH to put it out, he decided to pretend to put it in the back pocket on my jeans...he won't do that again as I nearly deafened him with my scream :o:rotfl::D :rotfl:

A bit off the subject but we have a house in France which is always inhabited by spiders, I dont mind them myself and they stop loads of flies. Anyway we always used to find dead ones in the bath as they would go in and not get out. Grandma had been given a truely bizare present of a spider emergency escape ladder, we all laughed but tried it dangling from the taps into the bottom of the bath. Now we have no dead spiders when we go back and i dont have to pick them out and throw them out the window.

A thick bit of string from the taps down to the bottom of the bath works a treat!

(on another spider tale, there was one that frequented our house regularly in the bath/shower and i would throw it out the window, next day it would be in the nextdoor neighbours bath and we would hear a scream from the kids and the next day dear Fred would be back in our bath! Poor thing didnt know whether it was coming or going!)
