Too many spiders

Hi everybody!:-)
I am knew on this forum and like many of you i suffer from a debilitating form of spider phobia. Tonight again as i was trying to enjoy a film with my partner, i noticed a pretty big spider on the surround of my fireplace. I had to leave my partner to deal with it as the only thing i can do is run away, close the door of the lounge and make sure that a spider cannot pass under the door.
It is actually a nightmare to be like me, i can say that in a way it is destroying a bit of my life.
Now, i have noticed that they very often are close to the fireplace. i suspect they do come from there. I live in a first floor flat and my upstairs neighbour who doesnt have any open fireplaces, doesnt have spiders... Does anybody has an idea on how to temporarily close a fireplace so that they dont come in?0 -

unless it's wearing a builders helmet i'm pretty sure smashing the spray can over the spiders head would kill it.0 -
My mum's window cleaner told her that wiping vinegar around window frames keeps them away. He did it for her last time he cleaned them - must remember to ask her if it worked.
I personally favour the hoover - with the longest nozzle attachment!Money can't buy you happiness, but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.

When we moved into our house the garden was covered in Ivy, literally every square inch of fence had it growing on it. We stripped it back and found a gazillion spiders nests and spiders everywhere! That was a year ago, and although we have alot less spiders now there are still a lot of them. I don't mind so much in the garden but they keep coming into the conservatory and weaving cobwebs everywhere, so much so that at least once a day you walk into a new one.
Has anyone got any good tips to encourage them not to build their homes in mine?!?!?!
Thank you

I read or heard somewhere that if you collect conkers, make holes in them and leave them on windowsill/ round the edges of the room they will repel spiders. Don't know if its true - someone might have been having me on, but come the autumn it might be worth a go.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

No idea whether it works, but conkers! Apparently spiders hate them - or is it an old wives tale?
Edit: Bizzimum: Ditto! But haven't heard about the hole part!0 -
Yes, i heard this tip about the conkers too, but only recently so havent had a chance to try it yet. i was told to put one in each corner of each room. The only thing is, just catching sight of the conker out of the corner of my eye will probably make me shudder .....:eek:Experience is the toughest teacher because she gives the test first then the lesson

I know the feeling, I've just moved into a very old house that hadn't been lived in for 5 years and its full of them. I'm sick of walking into cobwebs at 4am when I'm staggering for a p1ss, it really does frighten the crap out of you when you're half asleep and you walk into something tickly in your face!
I bought some flea spray which had a variety of other insects listed on the back including spiders. It killed them, but only lasted a few weeks. However if you can kill the nest that might be a start!0 -
Oooooooh great thread ... off to find a conker tree, will check back later to see if there are any other suggestions too. Stardrops, anyone?0
