I bought some flea spray which had a variety of other insects listed on the back including spiders. It killed them, but only lasted a few weeks. However if you can kill the nest that might be a start!

Sorry missk_ensington but had to laugh at this, had visions of the spiders coming back to life:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We also moved into an old house last year and it does need quite alot of work and it seems to be FULL of spiders, not just the little kind but the huge ones, bigger than my kids hands, huge thick black legs and massive black bodies. They also seem quite agressive, if you go towards them they actually jump in your direction rather than away from you.

They are seriously HUGE:eek: i have never seen anything that big outside of a zoo and i have gone from not being scared in the least to being terrifed, and OH is worse:rolleyes: :D

I actually got bitten by one the other day so now i keep my distance but the whole issue is really beginning to freak me out. Especially the one in the bathroom, he seems to live near the toilet and he now runs out to watch us everytime someone goes in, it means that late at night we all run in, lift our feet high and run out again.

So i will be stocking up on conkers:cool:

QueenB - I think they are getting bigger, I'm sure they are alot nastier looking than when I was a kid and I was scared stiff of them then! Last Saturday my colleague emailed me a photo of one on the wall at work, she had blu tacked my business card near to it - and it was bigger that the card:eek:  I spent Monday at work with me feet up!

I will be chasing the kids away from the chestnut tree and keeping all the conkers to myself!!!!

Yes, I think they can bite. WARNING This won't make us - including me! - feel any better, but I always hear on nature documentaries phrases like "a tarantula can give you a nasty bite but..." or "if you are bitten by a blackwidow spider, you should..."

Trouble with getting rid of spiders is you get rid of a creature that eats lots of flies and moths, I too dont like spiders much but prefer them to flies. Sorry its not a cure to get rid of them but just a point that makes me feel better when a spider scares me

i get really bad reactions to spider bites - 2 inch across hard swellings..... and that's from little spiders..........the actual biting part doesn't hurt but the bites itch like mad afterwards.
