Too many spiders

There is a spider vacuam (sp) and I think they sell them in Betterware type catalogues. You hoover the spider up gently and then put them outside. My friend has one and am keeping an eye out for one.
I can't bear to hoover them up, I just imagine them going up that dark tunnel and how horrible it must be for them. If they are on the floor I do the glass over them and a card slipped under and deposit them outside.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Well, they are back in the house.
Was sat watching TV when a monster came running out from under the gas fire, and under a chair. Needless to say when hubby turned to look at me to find out why I'd shrieked I wasn't there - was stood shaking in the kitchen.
Unfortunately he couldn't find it to get rid of it for me - we're still wading through piles of boxes from when he moved in so there is stuff everywhere - ideal ground cover for the little (and huge) b***rs.
So, came up here (don't get as many spiders upstairs) and dug out this thread. Have just bought a plug in unit from eBay, and really hope it works!
I have a cat, but she's the sort that herds spiders towards you as a present, ie bl***y useless! Thankfully she didn't spot this one...
Here's hoping the unit arrives asap and works!

edited to add, re using a vacuum or a shoe, no way! With a vacuum the spider would be passing my hand at some point, which I'm not happy about, and with a book or shoe I'd never touch it again and I like books and shoes! Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

I too am aflicted by this paralysing fear, it took all my courage just to read this thread as even the word s***** freaks me out. I spent the whole of the last two summers with my windows closed (even during this summers heatwave!) and have slept in my car overnight before now! Now that I live on my own I HAVE to deal with them, if I don't kill them there is no way I would be able to stay in the house. I'm really annoyed as I recently moved to a first floor flat and hoped that would mean the end of these vile creatures but apparently not, I've had five big ones since I moved here in June. I have a cat but she is the worst s***** catcher ever, I love her to bits but have to say she is a pathetic guard cat!
I have tried the vacuum s***** catchers - rubbish, suction was pathetic never actually tried it on a real live one as could never get that close without having a mini breakdown! I have the s***** catcher with the prongs that close in on it but the handle is way too short and although it catches the plastic s***** that comes with it I'm not convinced it would contain a wriggling live one. I could never get close enough to place aglass over it and even if I could there is no way I'd be able to get rid of it.
So... I have come up with the idea of a fly swat. A book or shoe could never be used again and with a fly swat you are only at arms length from it for a split second. Fly swat can then be run under hot water to remove the horrible thought of a s***** having touched it. The remains then get hoovered up by a different hoover to the one I normally use.

I have one of those too and agree that the handle is way too short. It does however work but took a couple of goes to get it right over the spider as it was moving! but we did catch a couple and it didn't drop them which was what I was frightened of. Touch wood we havent had any really big ones yet but I know September is spider time!!!!!  :eek:Do what you love :happyhear0 -
just watched kim and aggie tonight, they mentioned spiders hate citronella oil (available ebay, pound shops etc). they made a mix of it with water and wiped it all over the place with a cloth.
also someone once mentioned to me, if there's climbing plants on outside of your home such as ivy, this encourages them, don't know if that true.0 -
We usually have loads of big ones - which is a real pain as I have a spider phobia. For some reason though I've not seen any this year (famous last words!).Stompa0

I have a friend in the States who has her house and grounds sprayed twice a year....I think its initially to keep Mosquitoes at bay but she says that whatever they use kills everything and she never gets any sort of bug in the house....
Its totally over the top as far as I am concerned and of course kills friendly as well as unfriendly bugs.... but it does work apparently...
What about trying one of those 'fog' thingys in a can that you open up in the house and then leave for several hours, I think they use them if you have fleas in the house..... not sure where you get them though.....
Good luck...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Had a big one leap off the draining board when I was drying up and run under the washing machine:eek: however when I got up next day it was dead on the floor - my jack russell had had it in the night!:D he'll kill anything - he's not fussy - so far he's had lots of little birds:mad: he now wears a bell on his collar, frogs, flies etc and now spiders!Do what you love :happyhear0

I had a massive one under my pillow the other night - when I am reading I have 3 pillows and I take one away to go to sleep - the other night when I picked off the top one - there was a massive one peering at me. I screamed so loud I woke up the kids! I don't know where this fear has come from as I don't remember being scared as a child.0
