That newspaper report in The Independent was dated "Friday, 16 July 2004"!

You were too quick for me! It just seemed to fit so well I missed the date!
It is strange that no newspaper or on-line news is covering either the power cut or Cahoot's accessibility.
  • New enrty screen:
    Dear Customer

We apologise that cahoot.com was unavailable yesterday and today (Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16th October).

The site will shortly be up and running and you will be able to see any transactions you made up until 7.30am yesterday (Wednesday 15 October). Any transactions on your account made after that time will have been actioned but may not display yet so please don’t worry. These should be updated over the next 24 hours. Any payments set up to go yesterday or today should be processed as usual.

Once the site is back online and you access your account today, you will be able to use your account as normal. However, transactions may not display instantly but they will be updated over the next 24 hours. Please bear with us as we bring the website back up and running. We are working as quickly as possible to do this.

Once again, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Cahoot is part of the Santander Group one of the world's most successful and well-capitalised banks with nearly 70 million customers and remains a safe place for your money.

    Many thanks

  • I've had a number of problems with cahoot over the years. About 5 years ago I discovered a major hole in their direct debits system which actually broke the DD rules. I ended up having to get BACS (who run the DD scheme) involved to sort it out. According to the rules, a DD not used for 13 months or more is deemed to have expired. In that case the bank (cahoot in this case) has to inform me of this and offer me the option of renewing it or leaving it dead (they can renew it automatically, and most banks probably would). However, they hadn't done this and allowed me to transfer money from another bank using an expired DD. The other bank allowed the money to go to cahoot, and it showed up. I then transferred it from current to savings account. Two days later the other bank recalled the payment because the DD was showing as expired. That sent me thousands overdrawn in the current account because I'd moved the money to savings. Much mud-slinging between the two banks with me in the middle. Neither bank admitted to doing anything wrong. To make matters worse, cahoot now tried to charge me interest on the 'overdrawn' amount plus a fee. Then they tried to report me to Experian! I ended up brining BACS in and they discovered that cahoot's system didn't comply with the DD rules. After many months I got an apology from cahoot and the fees paid back. They were then basically made to fix their system.

Then a few months ago I needed to do a CHAPS payment. I phoned to do that, and went through all the security questions. I was told one of my answers was wrong and was then basically dealt with like a criminal. It turned out that the reason I'd got it 'wrong' was basically because I was asked a security question that I'd never set up in the first place - I didn't give the wrong answer because they asked me the wrong question.

I think this 'power outage' is just the last nail in the coffin now.

Cash machine let me withdraw from my Cahoot account a little earlier today; but couldn't give a balance.

However, I thought all withdrawal requests are authorised by the issuing bank; a process which presumably involves checking the account balance - so if they can give cash out why can't they give a balance?
  • I can't log into Nationwide now (www.nationwide.co.uk), I've tried all my other bank accounts (Barclays, Natwest, HSBC) all fine, but Nationwide doesnt even bring up their homepage. Anyone else?
