I have recently signed up to a post office telephone line (the engineer is coming on the 16th) as the only reason we need a telephone line is for broadband and we like the min 1 month contract.

If an engineer is required to visit, then a connection charge looks inevitable.

You can check your line yourself - connect a handset and dial 17070. If you get a reply (automated), this should give you the phone number. In that case the line just needs switching on at the exchange (no charge by the post office).

But from what you say, they have found the line to be disconnected.

but if the line has been disconnected, they wouldnt have the facility to dial 17070 would they? I only ask as my girlfriend has just moved into a new house, and the previous tenant cancelled their TalkTalk landline on the 15th December, but the post office wants £110 as an engineer will 'definitely' need to visit apparently....and for the life of us we cant see why, and they wont budge on it.... gonna try BT, see if we can go straight to the horses mouth and negotiate a cheaper reconnection, the lines only needed for Broadband really

    Exactly.

No line means a connection charge.

but a connection charge is different to an new installation fee though?

I remember the days when my parents moved into the house with no working phone line, and BT reconnected it for 9.99 as there was no physical work needed in the house (the line was already there) .....suppose those days are gone ;-)

    1471 and 1571 FREE.

Do you know if you have to order 1571 or how to set it up? When I log into my account it is listed under services but if I dial 1571 it doesn't work. 1471 does work though. I assumed 1571 would work automatically as it's free?

I agree that it's a good service though and no minimum 12 month or 18 month contract like you have with BT.

and better inclusive calls with broadband for <£20 or the <£25 option - BT dont come close, Im on BT Wholesale rebranded Orange broadband, resold BT broadband seems to be alot more stable than LLU'd ( CPW's TalkTalk & AOL, Tiscali to name a few ) companies excluding o2 who I hear/read are great

£5 Orange Broadband & £10.50 BT do me great ;), if they didnt I'd go for the PO service
