  • Has anyone used WhipCar? -
I haven't used it myself but have heard good things, but what does everyone else think? Have you used the service?

Auto Europe, very low rates, 8% cashback via quidco, cheap excess waiver available on most rentals.

insurance4carhire offer annual policies for very low cost. Quidco cashback available. Also for European residents.
  • A friend of my Wife's just used Suncar for car hire in Turkey. When they arrived to pick up the car, no one had any idea who Suncar were. They ended up having to hire at the Airport. As yet, they have been unable to get any response from Suncar

Suncar is a broker hence why they wouldn't have seen a little desk or such like at the airport. Suncar is also a very dirty broker! They have taken money from many people and then when you turn up at the airport you don't get your car as they have not paid the Rental company.

I'm in the process of trying (in vain!!) to get a refund and have taken this a step further then just batting emails back and forth with them (Their claims department does not want to talk to people....I wonder why!) F.O.S will be getting a complaint form about SunCar or Decode Car Hire (Whomever they are!!) and my bank our also on the case in trying to get the money back (Stupid me paid via Visa Debit card!):o

This Co appears as the cheapest car hire on several websites, but be careful, as I was presented with a bill for 27.22 Euros when returning a cat to Avis at Pisa airport yesterday. This was for 14 days "Road Tax" and came as a bit of a shock at the end of the holiday.
The (very) small print does say this is excluded, but is very easy to overlook.
Avis said they had received "several" complaints about auto-europe for the same thing.
    Cheers

Be very VERY careful when comparing quotes for car hire abroad. If you drive in Europe and cross a national border you may be liable to pay a very high extra fee; we were charged an extra 33% when we picked up in Poland and told AUTOEUROPE's agent were driving to Slovakia. Apparently we were warned in the small print there may be an extra charge, but 33% deserves more than small print. Sharp practice I call it. I shall not be using them again.
  • I've just booked a mid-size SUV with Virgin for 4 days in Boston, via Alamo, including Sat Nav and platinum insurance (free additional drivers, tank of fuel) for £152, same thing on Alamo website is £285 excluding additional drivers or sat nav. Virgin deffo worth having a look at
  • Hello,

Not too sure if this is in the right place as it concerns the repercussion on my credit card re-payments since using a separate excess policy from a car rental company.

3 months ago I hired a car in Ireland from budget and to save money on the excess insurance I purchased separate excess insurance which was roughly half the price of budgets. When I told the guy at the counter I had my own excess cover he informed me because I wasn't using the budget excess cover policy I would have to pay approx £1000 deposit plus the hire fee on my credit card right away. This is usual practice when not using the rental companies excess insurance so I thought nothing of it. The hire went well and the car was returned with no problems. A week later I had the deposit credited to my credit card - so happy days! I had been on holiday and saved on my car hire.

In the following months I noticed that my virgin credit card repayments were not as I expected. Previous to the car rental I had a balance of £800 on my credit card which was interest free until Feb 2011. I was a bit baffled as my outstanding balance was below £800 and I was getting charged interest every month.

I called virgin and asked what had happened to the promotional rate on my card to which they pointed out the return of the deposit had counted as a payment and had in turn wiped out my promotional balance as they pay that first. They said there was nothing they could do even though it wasn't a payment but a deposit return. I just have to continue to pay it off plus the interest that it is now gaining.

I'm really annoyed to say the least. I feel like I have shot myself in the foot trying to save money!

I just thought I'd post this as a warning to make people think twice about using stand-alone excess insurance if they also have a promotional rate active on their card. This could be jeopardised by the return of a high deposit from a car hire company.

    Thanks for reading.
  • I recently was asked by a friend about car rental (specifically in the US) and was going to send them a direct link to this article. However, I had a read of it first and reckon this article needs a bit of a refresh, in particular regarding the insurance info and some spelling and grammar. I hope the following contributions are of some help:

    Step 1:
    • Typo: Differnce -> Difference
    • Info: Sat nav section could refer to new apps such as MapDroyd and HTC Sense features where maps can be pre-downloaded for offline use.
    • Info: Fees charged for one-way rentals, local taxes, pick-up location charges (such as from airports) are common and worth a mention.

Step 3, "Different Types of Cover" drop down:
    • Info: CDW bit could mention some commonly found policy exceptions, such as tire and windshield damage, which may not be covered except under Super CDW.
    • Info: This section should ideally include an explanation of 3rd party liability cover and extensions such as Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI), which are typically not covered by standard travel insurance.
    • Info: Uninsured motorist protection is another cover option that can commonly be itemized separately from other insurance cover. Probably worth a mention.

    Car Hire Checklist:
    • Info: In the "Before You Start Driving: Local legalities" section, the article should mention International Driving Permits, with perhaps a link to some sources for them (AA, RAC, Post Office) as this may be an extra cost to think about.

    Kind Regards,

    Pedrodude
  • Did a Kayak search and they came up with enterprise car hire. Got as far as the last page just before placeing my order and.
    1. I did not come accross any terms and conditions
    2. Found the following statements on the final agreement
Price does not include coverage, additional surcharges, local taxes, etc
    and
Actual prices may vary depending on the vechicle class that is selected.

Never come across the word "coverage" before is it some sort of insurance?
Is this normal for USA hire companies (that you cant work out the final cost even though this is the final agreement. and etc could mean anything)
At this stage I already chose the vechicle class so is this a round about way of saying that if they are forced to up-grade because they did not have the right car available I would be forced to pay extra for the upgrade even though they give me no choice?
  • On carhire3000 web page I found a "Price watch" link. Usual type of thing you see in shops. If you can find the same thing cheaper we will match it or give you 10% off our price. Thought it might be useful to mention it
In fact I have found a car hire that is cheaper than theirs. If it's the same thing I'm not sure. I don't like the wording of the agreement on the cheaper one so I may give price watch a try.
