Right had a pretty good day today.

Hoovering done, a bit more tidying and another load of washing, and also sorted out and re-ordered the two cupboards we have for food (only little so need to keep the things we need in the one we can get to more easily)

Did a detailed shopping list (in shop order - ever so slightly anal I know :o ) and then when I picked up OH we tackled tescos not too bad actually. We did pretty well and I made spad bol from stratch tonight - first time I've done that so feels like proper OS meal to me :j even put in a carrot and half a pepper to increase our vege intake ;)

York was horrid - really need some new work clothes for my new job and though I'd look in Next - big mistake - it was literally at a standstill at one point - found 2 things i liked so wrote the codes down and will go to the out of town one tomorrow I think. Did manage to get the stamps I wanted for wedding invites, got trevor sorbie and bodyform freebies from boots (thanks to whoever posted about these the other day as I often forget to look at the machine as trying to cut down boots spending ;) ) (also got a voucher from free bodyform towels from Tescos today so must to a big promotion). Paid in change to holiday fund (£18) and £15 cheque from cashback site so I'm pleased - bag was lighter on way back too :T

Need to look at bills now and then think I'll have a play with my new stamp for wedding invites - just opened a bottle of white wine (was half price in tescos a little while ago) and just about to watch the festival of rememberance.

It's very quiet on here - hope everyone's ok

  • Its been a real bad few days. DD's tortoise died yesterday too and she was very upset about that, so today after Westie has gone, we are going to take her to decide what little pet she would like next. She has said a gerbil/hamster but dont want it in the house-so will have to go in OH's office outside.

I don't mean to cause any offence here PP, but I think you really should take some time out before buying yet another pet for your daughter. I know it's been a traumatic time for you all having to rehome your Westie, and for what it's worth I think you did the right thing, but I think you need some time out to think and do some research before introducing another animal to the household ... even something as small as a hamster or gerbil has extensive care requirements and wouldn't fare well being shut outside! ... unless of course your OH's office is constantly heated ;)

My comments are a result of you mentioning the fact your tortoise died recently. Now I realise I may be jumping the gun here and your tortoise may well be one that's been in the family for many years and handed down from grandparents or whatever, and I apologise if so. Most species of tortoise will easily outlive us humans, often surviving well over 100 years so it's quite rare to hear of one dying in captivity these days, if kept in the correct environment, unless it is already of a very great age!

It might be an idea to give her some time to research the needs of her chosen pet ... either buy some books or check out various websites online ... so she knows exactly what she's letting herself in for and is fully commited and prepared to provide everything the animal needs for a happy and healthy life :)

  • Have to agree C_Q especially if thinking about hamsters as on the whole they sleep through the day and come out to play at night, not very child friendly when they nip too!

Our hamster used to be housed near the pc and drove me mental running in its wheel late in the evening
  • I would never actually recommend a hamster as a child's pet for all the reasons you mention Edlass. Actually the best pet for a child, if we're looking at the small furry variety, would be a rat ... and I know many of you will go ewwwwww LOL!

They are very clean, friendly, inquisitive, intelligent and are really great animals to have around though ... and they very rarely bite! Males are better than females in this respect, but the downside is that they are very social animals and don't like being alone so unless you're happy to keep more than one then you must be prepared to spend lots of time with them ;)

Failing that I'd say next best would probably be a guinea pig ... or at the other end of the scale (ha!) a corn snake ;) ... but then we're talking considerable costs in setting up a proper environment for one!

I think a wait of a couple of weeks would be a good idea, rather than make a hasty, and possibly wrong, decision whilst you are all feeling emotional at letting one of the family go

Unfortunately I'm working tomorrow, so I think I'll have to despatch the long suffering Mr Pink to the supermarket to look for the meat bargains. ;)
