buglawton are you sure your mobile phone doesnt have a modem?
name your mobile & model and I will research it for you

I have a Nokia 3200 locked to Virgin which has gprs WAP access. It connects OK to my laptop using inbuilt infra-red. But when experimenting, I could not get the laptop to see a GPRS modem when connected to the phone.

The £1/day GPRS deal is unique to Orange. If one day in the future I chance upon a cheap GPRS unlocked pcmcia card modem, I'll try your idea - let's hope Orange don't discontinue this. Meanwhile the GSM dialup modem (old-tech) stuck in the side of the laptop seems to do the job.

Can't you pick up a cheap cable on Ebay for Nokia to laptop?

Cables tend to work better than infrared.
Before you buy Google Nest or British Gas Hive check out ESPproMon the Android and iOS Smartphone app that helps you build the same system from just £30.

Been there - I ordered a cheapo cable but never got it to work. But after I installed the CD driver for the cable, the infra-red link, which emulates a cable, started to work which it would not do before! Anyway, an unlocked or Orange GPRS card for the laptop would be a neat fix when it can be had cheaper.

in your internet connection you set the number it dials to *99#, via cable, bluetooth or IR this forces the 3200 to use the gprs modem via your laptop - your pc only needs to use the modem not see it, pc only needs to see the phone ;)
If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me

Interesting - tried this and got a dial up box with *99# in it as you say... (not seen this before!) tried dialling up with 'user' as user & no pw - (supposed to be the Virgin setting?) and get a no dial tone error. Add the 08440 544020 phone number after the *99# same result.

do virgin allow full access or just wap, used to be wap only couple yrs ago when i was on Virgin, as T-mob blocked full access to payg & virgin users, effectively T- mob contract only had full acccess

the *99# is all thats needed, this tells the phone to connect to internet via gprs so no dial up number is needed, try *99*

Just checked my 3200's phone features via that http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,46897,00.html link (thanks) and Connect to the Internet is NOT supported, while for example for the 6230 it is. So I'll stop chasing that idea for now.
