I thought about posting this sooner, but it was about to expire - however ...

If you have friends in Italy, you could ask about the Wind SIM card with its Mega No-Limit option. For a monthly top-up of €20, this has a 1GB monthly allowance in Italy, which I believe becomes 200MB in roaming.

It was due to expire soon, but apparently will be extended to July. They don't seem to have done English translations of the relevant pages yet - this is a search of their site.

On the first result,

with no Italian, that is just about understandable - sign up before end of June, valid to end of July - €3000 value per month, etc

For the other pages, you can get a passable translation from Google

getting a SIM is a bit tricky; I don't think you can order online; and it's necessary to have a Codice Fiscale, a sort of financial ID to buy one - but maybe it's worth looking on eBay for a pre-registered one?

As indicated by seaniboy an ideal solution is the Orange £1 per day unlimited access coupled with Onspeed web accelerator.

The £1 per day is only available to PAYG but if you are on contract you can pick up a PAYG sim for £1. You only pay Orange £1 on the days YOU want to use it not everyday and it expires at midnight each day.

Having used Google's unimpressive (free) accelerator I wasn't expecting much from Onspeed. Google must have 100 times more resources than Onspeed.

Onspeed makes web browsing via a mobile a pleasant experience and it has a 7 day free trial. Currently showing a 5X speed increase (varies from 40K to 300K). Onspeed is only £20 per year WHEN (not if) you decide to buy it.

I have contract phone with O2, I have never been charged with GPRS use, although I use it everyday for all my internet needs

Is it an inclusive item within your contract or are has their system messed up?

How much is your monthly contract with O2?
