And as I say it is working again now. And the laptop is as well. Does anything look 'wrong' with this info?

    Cloister, keep running!

And daisies, you aren't allowed to turn your PC off ever again :p

It could be that both the laptop and the PC are trying to take the same IP address, meaning only one would be able to speak to the router. Repairing the PC connection should try and force it to get a new IP.

Ok, that makes sense. But why has this suddenly started happening? I downloaded some Windows updates last night for both - could that have something to do with it? (Although I was running both last night without any apparent problems) Is there a way of making sure this doesn't keep happening? I can do without an hour fiddling around every time I swtich the PC on!

You shouldn't need to, the router is supposed to keep an eye on things like that, give them different IPs. The only way I've found that happens is if the router is also turned off. Then when you turn it on, and turn both computers on at the same time, they both ask it for an IP, and it gives them both the same IP.
But windows should flag this up, with a balloon saying 'IP conflict detected', so if you didn't see that, it could be something completely different.
  • Just done the CMD thing, and they (at least for now) have different IP addresses. So - is the conclusion it is a problem with the router?

Well, I'm not sure since windows didn't pop up an error. And we can't really do much more without getting you to poke the computer, but since its working, that wouldn't do much anyway.

So, enjoy it while it lasts? :)

Sorry I didn't check back sooner... it is possible to manually set the IP address on each computer so the router doesn't control it.

If you continue to get problems with it, it might be worth looking at doing just that. but for now if it's working ok leave it as it is.

Plus if you want to use the laptop elsewhere manually setting the IP would be a bad idea.

It happened again this morning - booted up - showed as connected but got the 'IE cannot open the page'. ***sigh*** Is it possible to set the IP address for the PC - but leave the laptop for the router to 'find'. Could it be the network card that is plugged into the PC? If it is the router... Should I get a new one?

Well, easiest way to see if its an IP clash is to run the ipconfig on the PC and laptop. If they are both listed as having the same IP, thats the problem.

Having connection issues here too. My wife has an Acer laptop which runs Vista basic. You can still gain access to the internet, Google is fine and a few of her favourites connect no problems, but Yahoo, MSE forums (connects to the website OK but crashes at forums!?), and one of my online football games it slows down no end and misses out chunks of the page (html stuff?) or just doesn't connect at all? error message suggests its got no internet connection but signal is at full strength (wireless via BT hub) and then connects to the next page fine.

    Any suggestions?

Answers before 5:30 please so I can print them out and try them at home as I can't access the forums from home, lol! Thanks in advance :)
