Hmm, I'm stumped too. You're connected to it, but its not listening to the computer.

With the laptop again, can you find anything in the router page (192.168.2.1) that has mention of MAC filtering, or something like that?

I typed the number into internet explorer on my laptop and it asked me for my username and pasword (errrr..... I have no idea). Is this what you meant?

Thats what you should get, it's the login page to your router.
This signature was previously violated by my wife, that'll learn me to stay perma logged in.

Fortunately, the offending comments have now been removed - my apologies to all who had to read it and laugh at my expense.

Thats an idea, what model is your router?

Sometimes routers can be set to allow only certian computers to connect and they look at a unique number on your network card.

To test this easily are you using USB wireless dongles, if you are simply take the one out of your laptop and plug it into the PC and see if when it connects to the router it works.

    C

I am only using a usb wireless dongle on my pc, the laptop has wireless built in. So cant test that.

I take it you don't know the username /password to that. if it hasn't been changed then if you look underneath the router itself on the bottom it should have a sticker saying username and password, try that.

then again you probably wouldn't even get an address from the router if thats the case.

Just have a look at the settings in IE.

open up internet explorer and click on tools then internet options

Click on the connections tab and then LAN settings. and make sure all three check boxes are unticked. then ok and ok again to come out of that and give it a try.

Went in - only had one box ticked - unticked that. Have now gone back to IE and it saus that no connection to the internet is currently available. The wireless network box is still showing as 'connected'. HAve rebooted too and not made any difference.

ITs not on the router. I seem to remember it being in the manual, in the box, which is now in the loft. I will have to go and borrow some step ladders to retrieve it. Is there anything else i can check first?

  • Just done the IP config thing again, on the laptop and PC and both sets of numbers are now the same, except the IP address which is one number different.

What make/model is the router? Its probably shipped with the default username/password. http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html has a huge list for you to check :)

Though they don't seem to have belkins, and I know that 192.168.2.1 is a comman gateway for belkins.
  • Right - we are back on - jsut tried connecting again at it accepted it. Hooray - for the second time. Will reboot and see if it still works then.
