Internet Connection problems - can anyone help me please?

Options
I am having problems connecting my PC to the internet. Everything was working fine yesterday - but today it isn't. I am typing this from my lappie BTW - so I know there is nothing wrong with my router/wireless network.

I have run 'Diagnos connection problems' which is displayed on the page when i try to connect to the internet.

The network settings say I am connected - it seems to be IE that isn't working.

I have read the diagnostic report that has been produced, and it says 'There is no default gateway entry'. What does that mean? Surely it does - my laptop is connecting fine!

Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can try next?

Thanks

There are a few things you can try...

Firstly reboot your router (I'd like to eliminate this as a problem first)

Then click Start then Run and a black box will appear.

In that box type ipconfig. Then it will display some information - if you could post that here it would be helpful.

Because it says there is no default gateway I am running on the assumption that you have not got a dhcp address from your router. Usually that would supply the gateway which will be the address of your router.

What I am expecting you to get is a 169.x.x.x address and it will probably say "autoconfiguration address"

This would mean that the problem lies with your router. I imagine you have plugged your network cable into the router and it has power so that would make it look like you have a connection.

Let me know how you get on.

    Thanks

  • Thanks. HAve switched off router and left for 5 minutes and turned it back on. The laptop has reestablished its connection to the router, but the PC is giving me the same 'Cannot display the webpage' error message. Will try your next suggestion.

  • OK, did > Start > Run > IPConfig. A black box flashed up on the screen for a nanosecond and then disappeared.

I havene't got my PC plugged into my router - it is wireless. Should I try connecting the PC and router up with a network cable?

Yeah, try the direct connection, what I should have said is:

Start - run - then CMD and a box will appear.

Then type in ipconfig - sorry was thinking faster than I was typing.

its not just you i am with Taslk Talk for phone and Broadband we have had problems over the last few days with both.. (could it be the atmospheric conditions) Today no phone or internet went into t.t. assist and go and they couldnt connect me at first tried again about 20 mins later again no connection T.T. assist and go had to connect me automatically (Perhaps they boost signal, i dont know )
Its not how far you fall but how high you bounce back that matters
