just to add , you don't need a special Iphone sim card you just need a newish one with 3G capabilities which all the new O2 ones have. I upgraded to a samsung toocu ultra got sent a new 3G card as my previous one was about 5 years old! sold the tocco and bought an iphone off ebay for £165. My sim works perfectly in there.

I have the web bolt on which uses the edge or normal gprs connection depending on signal strength. I use th wi-fi connection in my house to connect when i'm at home to save on my 200mb allowance.

You can only use the mcdonalds wifi if you have the official Iphone sim and tarriff which is obviously dearer. Its nowt to do with the 2G or 3G it's just the depends what sim and tarriff you've got.

    Thanks madison,
Do you have a 3G or 2G iphone? does it make much difference to you?
I hadn't realised the £10 "unlimited internet" bolt on was limited to 200mb. Is this a lot of internet usage?

I have the 2G but updated it to the newest software version through itunes so it's no different to the 2G really just has a metal back instead of plastic.

The web bolt on i have is just the standard O2 one which has what they call a 'fair usage limit' of 200mb , bit of a con really! and that costs £7.50 a month. It's a decent amount for normal browsing , e-mail , facebook etc.

The £10 one is that a specific Iphone? If it is then you'll probably find the 'fair usage limit' is a lot higher , about 1gb i believe.

There is no set limit, there's just a fair use policy. If your use is excessive, O2 will have words with you, and can cut you off. 200MB is NOT excessive by any stretch. I think you'd have to be in the GBs before you triggered any sort of fair use policy.

I think that if you view the iPhone for what it is - essentially an iPod Touch that can get online where there's no WiFi signal - rather than as a somewhat cumbersome mobile 'phone with a pointlessly pathetic 2 MP camera, then a second-hand 2G iPhone with an O2 PAYG iPhone SIM makes brilliant sense.

It really depends on just how much you will need to access data when out of range of a WiFi signal and whether the additional speed of 3G is worth to you the huge additional cost of a 3G iPhone contract.

    My view, anyway. :)

    I like what you say.

I just want to view my old iphone 2G as having an ipod touch that I can get online when in range of wifi.

How much do you think a good condition old iphone 2 is worth now I need a new one, mine is worn out.

Can you still buy a new 2G iphone with waranty that I can extend?

The limit for the £7.50 bolt on is 200mb , it's very clearly worded in my new contract information. It clearly states if it is exceeded they will charge £2.93 per mb over the 200mb. I doubt very much they would let anyone go into GB , 5 times over the limit , with no charges!

Not on any of mine. I've got 2 Simplicity contracts (one purchased yesterday) and an iPhone PAYG, and they are all subject to a fair use policy that has no actual limit. There's no mention anywhere on the O2 website of the 200mb limit having being imposed again.

this seems to be about the 'cheapest' way to get the new Iphone 3G S:

Pre order on mobiles.co.uk - They are a part of Carphone Warehouse. Go via quidco and get £60 cashback.

Tarriff: go for 1200 mins 500 texts at £45 per month. Cost of phone: £87.11
Downgrade tarriff to £35 per month (600 mins 500 texts) after 9 months.

    Net cost over 18 months:
    87.11 + (9*45) + (9*35) = £807.11 minus £60 quidco = £747.11

If you go for the cheaper 35 pound tarriff to start with the net cost is
    £184.98 + (18 * 35 ) = £814.98 - 60 quid quidco = £754.98

On PAYG: £440.40 which includes 12 months data. But if you want data + free mins on top, the best way would be to get a Simplicity sim (£20 per month) with free data bolt on.
Net cost over 18 months doing it this way =
    440.40 + (18 *20) = £800.40
You're paying a bit more for the freedom to walk away from the contract any time.

So it actually works out cheaper to connect on the higher tarriff as long as you remember to downgrade to the £35 tarriff after 9 months. It has to be said £700 + to get a phone over 18 months is not a bargain by anyones standards, but if you really 'WANT' the new Iphone this is the cheapest way to get it at the moment.

I received this from a customer service advisor after I queried the 'fair usage policy'

"The bolt-on is valid until the end of the current contract and is
subject to the network's fair usage policy. This, in effect, will limit
free use to 200MB per month, which is generally sufficient for average
    daily use for most customers."

I think they send a text message if you keep going over but I can't see them letting people go over every month and not charge and certainly not into GBs. It shows the 200mb usage allowance on the CPW website , it's not actaully called 'unlimited' on there anymore even though the staff still claim it is. when i queried this they stated they can use the word 'unlimited' as 95% of people don't go over and to see their T's and C's. so it's a bit naughty really and just an advertising ploy.
