Answering my own query in case anyone is interested

Mobiles.co.uk dont offer the iphone as an upgrade option yet so cannot get the £60 cashback - booo! No doubt they might in a few weeks time but I cant wait that long!! Have already been waiting months as damaged my iphone and got the insurance money in April for a replacement - patiently waited to see if new phone released before I replaced it.

a good excuse as any to buy the new model :T  :D
  • Carphone Warehouse are to sell the OLD 16 gig Iphone at the price of the old 8gig Iphone, to clear the way for the new Iphone 3GS........

If you current have the old iphone, and wish to upgrade to the new software as from the 19th June plug your iphone in to itunes and download the V3 software.

Oh 1 More think... Carphone Warehouse will now allow you upto £170 to trade in your old iphone against the new 3gs, this offer has not been made public yet, but to those in the know....... its coming!!!!!!

Stay tuned for more mobile mischief..

Where did you hear that they would be selling off older 16gig versions? Thought they would have had to send them back to apple to be upgraded maybe?

Not sure if that makes much difference to my choice as a new iphone taker....only works out around £80 more to take the 18 month 3GS instead with £44 month option and downgrade tariff after 9 months.

Guess its a question of whether the new features are worth £80 or not.

Not sure if this will work and not sure if this has been posted yet but:

If i were to buy the new iphone 3G s on a pay as you go package but swapped out the 'payg' sim with my 02 simplicity sim card, which i only got very recently, would the iphone read this sim, and therefore, using the contract of £20 a month with the free internet browsing and wifi? But also having the mins and text's that come along with the 02 simplicity contract.

If anyone can clarify with me, or if someone has already done this i would be very interested to hear.

    Thanks for your time

    Regards,

    B
  • If I was to buy an iphone through someone other than O2, ie carphone warehouse or mobiles.co.uk, would I still be classed as an O2 customer and be entitled to receive the £5pm discount on their home broadband product?

The simplicity SIM will work in the iPhone but you will only get free internet browsing if you have the internet bolt on on your simplicity contract as the internet that comes with the phone is only for the PAYG SIM included with the phone.

There is a way of using the free wi-fi though, when you first access one of the wi-fi hotspots covered it will ask you to register your phone number, enter the number of the PAYG SIM that came with the phone and it will give you free access.

If there's one thing O2's contract pricing has done for me, it's made me see contracts less as a "mobile service deal with a cheap/free phone", and more of an "expensive finance package for buying the phone", with some perks thrown in in the way of included minutes/texts etc. That's the way I've been using them anyway, which is not the MSE way. It's almost equivalent to buying it on a store loan.

A light user like myself who always had more minutes and texts than he knew what to do with, would be better off going Pay-as-you-go. There's no minimum monthly topup, and with the iPhone you get 12 months 'unlimited' internet bolt-on (which is what I use the iPhone for 90% of the time) for free, with no top-up obligation. Yes, that means in theory you can put £10 on and have it last all year.
After 12 months, you would have to pay £10/month for the internet bolt-on.

Total cost - potentially as little as £450 for a very light user who mostly uses it for the 3G data. More frequent users would benefit from the SIMplicity tarriff.

Can't fork out £440 at once for the handset? Nor me. I'll be using the Tesco credit card as mentioned on this site, which gives 12 months at 0%. Divide the repayments by 12, and pretend it's line rental (£37/month), and a nice oldschool 12 month 'contract' at that :)

I'll also most likely sell my 16GB, and throw the money into the card to reduce the payments. Combined, this makes the upgrade a *lot* more attractive.

Doesn't help for those stuck on 3G contracts I'm afraid (I've got the original iPhone, 16GB version, so I'm ok) just yet... best idea for those is to wait it out and enjoy the 3G one for a bit longer - possibly skip a generation, as is often wise with Apple's upgrades if you want decent value for money.

Thanks O2, bit of an own-foot shooting, but you've made me see contracts in a new (not as pleasant) light. I'll probably never be tied down like that again.

    Thanks Helix,

My 02 simplicity sim card already has the web and wifi bolt on, so i should be good to go with registering the number i already use. Is this correct?
