budgetdeficits wrote: »Just went into an O2 store yesterday on Cheapside in London and they had the iphone 4 PAYG BUT on their internal system it said specifically the iphone 4 CANNOT be unlocked! I queried it as on the external website it gave the impression that you can unlock all iphones after the initial launch date on 24th (I think) June. The guy in the store showed me their terminal (intranet I guess?) and I saw it said "The iphone 4 cannot be unlocked".... anyone else confirmed this? I remember I had an iphone 3G and they unlocked it for free after my contract ended so I assumed that what I read on the O2 website was correct which implied that ALL iphones can be unlocked!
It is possible to unlock the iPhone 4. How else would Apple sell it sim free?
To be honest, your best bet is to buy the phone from Apple and obtain a PAYG micro sim from them. O2 will, if you present them with a print out of your order confirmation, give you a micro sim and transfer your existing contract onto the new sim for you. It takes up to 24 hours to transfer and they will give you an adaptor (to use if your iPhone doesn't arrive before the sim switch). In the beginning, the universe was created. I am saying finally goodbye to a rotten Orange.
For the past few months I have been waiting and trying to upgrade to an HTC Desire or Iphone 3GS and they have offered me shoddy deals. It feels like its a sin for customers to ask for an HTC Desire or Iphone.
I fancy the Iphone 3 GS 18 GB and am switching to Voda.0 -

Hi, I currently have a 18 month sim only contract with Orange with a year to go on it. I have asked to cancel the contract to upgrade to the iPhone 3gs however the cost would be £103 to cancel the contract and re-start another. Is there anything else I can do? and if I were to cancel it, would I really want to be with Orange anymore?0

why would you think you can just 'cancel' the contract?
thats the whole point of a contract0 -
Understood, a contracts a contract, but it seems funny that instead of paying a £10 a month, I would be offering to pay the £25 to £35 a month for a longer time, surely from a business sense they should make some sort of exception?0

the way it works is the network offsets the handset cost over the contract cost/tariff
so on your £10 a month/6 month period you have paid £60
a £25-£35 spend isnt a high user and theres no shortage of takers for the iphone
if you want freedom then go sim free on your iphone then you have more levy on the contracts0 -
Oscar, I'm really sorry as I'm probably going to ask you stuff that you have already told other people, but reading through it all has totally confused me!!
I'm currently on a 12 month simplicity plan which ends in December I think.... obviously this is a pretty cheap contract at £20 per month with unlimited date, 1600 texts and 800 minutes.
Are you saying that you can cut your sim card to fit the iphone?
What do you think my best bet is to do? Buy one on the tesco contract and change over after the 12 months, or buy payg (can't really afford the upfront cost) and do whatever to alter my sim card to fit?
I would prefer the iphone 4 of course, but don't mind the previous version if it's going to work out a whole lot cheaper.
Or should I just wait til my contract is up and call them to ask about the reconditioned phones?
