Just out of interest I have just sold my unlocked 3GS on eBay for £290. If you were to buy a used 3GS then go for a Simplicity tariff at £20 per month this works out at £650 over 18 months. I think you can also get cheaper SIM only tariffs.

I have thought about buying a second hand one but I would rather not buy it of ebay. Just because I would like to see it before I buy it. Thanks for replying though :)

I have been thinking about going with the tesco deal then do the 02 simplicity deal after the 12 months are up.

    Hi there

Here's 3 options to think about with O2:

Ask for a reconditioned 3GS from the retentions team. They seem to offer the best deals that way.

Buy the 3GS handset outright and go for the £20 30 day contract and spend £5 for the extra 500Mb from October. Total cost is £25 and you have no contract to worry about.

Keep your current sim and phone and get the £150 O2 offer to customers. Use that towards the cost of the 3GS handset and shove your existing sim into it.

Hi there. thanks for replying. I was just wondering what exactly is reconditioned 3gs? Is it like second hand or something? because I would really like to stay with 02.
  • For what its worth, called into my local Tesco Extra over the weekend. Spoke to someone at the phone shop. All they had in stock was iphone 3gs 32gb. They said they expected iphone 4 to be coming in about 3 to 4 weeks.
    Can I wait that long??

It's a phone that has been ordered and then returned within the 14 day "cooling off" period. It's completely reconditioned and you wouldn't know it had been out of the box. They come with the same warranty as the new phones, but can not be sold as "new" because of trade descriptions.

So the 3 network now have the iPhone? Interesting - very interesting. I never got the 3G S in the end and at one point I was actually going to go for the HTC Desire, but battery life is important to me. I'll see what the next HTC Whatever battery life is like before making a decision. Anyone know when the white iPhone 4 is out? I hear that the problem is light leaking from the rear of the white iPhone and they don't know how to sort this problem out.

(You really have to wonder why as much if not more effort hasn't been put into perfecting the antenna instead of the colour of the phone).

this site needs to upgrade its iphone price comparison. Its been updated. Whats the current cheapest method NOT TESCO of getting an iPhone 4 on contract. Cashback etc

Why would you not choose Tesco if they are the cheapest overall? Just interested as I'm hanging around waiting for them to get back in stock. On that topic, anyone recently got an iphone 4 from tesco or know when they'll have regular stock?

If you know you can get a reasonable O2 signal where you live, then it's a good deal as you'll probably never need to contact their poor customer service (get fobbed off, passed between people, no call-backs etc). Otherwise see the following thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/35433077

The important thing to take note of is that if you return the phone within the cooling off period you will 1) have to wait ~6 weeks to get a refund due to it only being applied on your first billing date and 2) any calls and data usage (excluding Wi-Fi) will be charged at the full rate. btw, the duration for the refund is not stated in the T&C's and wasn't stated to me by the sales assistant in the shop when I specifically asked about returning the phone if I had a poor signal.

If you do buy from Tesco my advice is to turn off all the mobile data in the settings when you first get the phone and see what phone signal you get all around your house and then make some brief test calls and also get someone to call you, to ensure you are happy with the call quality. At least that way you will limit the costs you may have to repay if you did want to return the phone during the cooling off period.

To be honest, if you are that worried about Tesco's charging policy, you are better off getting a PAYG sim from them and shoving a tenner on it.

Tesco are unlikely to give you a micro sim, but there are loads of templates for cutting down a normal sim. Here's what I would do:

    1. Go to Tesco and get a couple of PAYG sims.
    2. Go home and cut one of the sim's down. If you make a mistake, you have a spare.
    3. Get the iPhone 4
    4. Shove the cut down PAYG sim in the phone
    5. Call the top-up line from your iPhone and shove a tenner on the sim
    6. Play with the phone

The tenner will probably get used quite quickly and it means you can play around with the internet and not have to worry about how much it's costing you. After 48 hours, Tesco will give you an extra £20 of credit to play with.

After you've fully tested the phone, you can switch to the contract sim that came with the phone and off you go. If you want to return it, you've not used the contract sim so there will be no charges.

  • Back in March I ordered a recon Iphone 3gs from retentions and I wrote on here how pleased I was with the O2 operative and the deal I got. My euphoria was short lived as I soon found I had been sent a 3G and not a 3GS, and it has taken over 4 long and frustrating months to get O2 to recognise their mistake and put it right. Finally, yesterday I spoke with a brilliant, helpful manager at retentions (Lee) who had listened to the original tape of my phone purchase and who accepted that I had indeed specified a 3GS and that they had sent the wrong model. The outcome is that my new 3GS is due to arrive tomorrow, I have a £30 credit for the inconvenience AND a £2 per month reduction in my contract for 18 months. Now that's what I call an outcome, and a good bit of PR from Lee.
At the time there were a few other contributors who had been sent a 3G instead of a 3GS; have any of you had the same problems in getting it sorted?
