If I read your post correctly, you have an AT&T 3GS, so there is one even more important question:
Are you going to be able to persuade AT&T to unlock your 3GS?
As far as I know AT&T currently dont offer unlocking, and without that, no UK sim will work in your iPhone.
Good point D123. Under the circumstances (that I'm leaving the country), they might unlock it but unlocking isn't difficult anyway - I've done it myself when coming to the UK on visits and have used my T-Mobile UK SIM in it.......but you can almost watch the battery drain when you do that, for some reason. I even know people here who have had the techs ("Geniuses" they call them) at the Apple Store do it when nothing else will fix a tech problem with the phone.........just don't tell anyone
On the other hand, surely it must be possible for O2 to flash the phone to lock it to their network rather than ATT's?
At the end of the day I may just have to just bend over and buy a new phone when I get there and use my existing one just as an iPod. It's amazing how much more the iPhone costs in the UK though. I guess I have higher prices (compared to US prices) to look forward to across the board when I come back thoughso this is just one more thing.
Cheers,

just got off the phone to retentions, pretty happy with the deal.. quoted the tesco deal, was really friendly and polite, just explained how the tesco deal had too many minuted for me anyway, as i'd only use about 150...
came straight back with £26/month recon 16gb, 300 mins, unlimited texts & data, 10pence for the handset lol £468 (and 10 pence...) for the contract seems to be not too bad, so i'm made up0 -

Is that for a 3gs on an 18 month contract? Quite interested as I need to upgrade now since my current mobile has decided to have a slow horrible death....:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -
Thank's to everyone for their postings, which I found really helpful. Just got a 3GS through o2 retentions. Said I was leaving for Tesco. Immediately offered deal of refurbished phone on 2 year contract with 300mins and unlimited text and internet and free calls at weekends. £25 per month and £20 for phone.0

Tried this technique and they said best they could do is £45pcm for a free phone for a 16GB 3GS... no chance.. i'll keep my simplicity until the new iphone is released and then jump ship!:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0 -
