My phone just arrived!! it's currently charging up. Anyone can give me quick tips on what/how to do first? It's just phone, no new SIM (O2) so I take it that I just put my current SIM in and connect it to Itunes and that is it?
    Any good apps recommendations?
    Thanks

First set a handset PIN and SIM lock code in case you lose the phone!

Just connect it to iTunes and it should automatically sync all your music. I found it quicker to download apps onto the laptop and then sync to the handset rather than downloading onto the handset directly IYSWIM. Definitely do that with podcasts as they killed my data (only have 10GB a month on my broadband). You can charge and sync at the same time using the USB connection.

Don't forget to switch on the Wi-Fi on the handset (settings menu) so that it automatically connects to your broadband at home, that should be faster than 3G. Also in the settings menu you can add Google calendar and Googlemail, you can then sync all your contact into your e-mail account. You can also import SIM contacts under the settings menu.

There are tutorials on YouTube and also on the Apple site which are worth watching - I didn't know mine had voice recognition until then! :rotfl:

Free apps worth a look include:
Remote (use handset as remote control for iTunes)
Touchmouse (use handset as a wireless mouse)
    Bump (sends contacts via Bluetooth)
    Paypal (send money via Bluetooth!)
    Say no to 0870
    Orange WiFi (local hotspots)
    Google (search, calendar, e-mail)
Opera Mini (faster browser than Safari)
    eBay
    Amazon
    Engadget
Tesco Finder (tells you which shelf stuff is on!)
    Wikihood
    Met Office
TheTrainLine (national rail enquiries is expensive)
PandoraBox (alerts when favourite paid apps are on sale)
    Formula One!! :j

I don't do social networking or games, sorry.

    Thank you FF.

When I get the Opera mini should I get rid off Safari?

Bump - does that boost the bluetooth in general? I don't seem to have much luck of getting it working - my friend tried to send me a song and even though we connected after a while, when it came to the actual sending stuff her phone could not connect to mine (even though we were supposed to be already paired).

OH got her iPhone in store, wouldn't budge on price of the phone nor the tariff. We can only get in store and through o2 as she will get a £125 friends and family credit.

We did get a free protective case thrown in worth £19.99 :p

I got my IPhone earlier this week on 3 and I am having a problem accessing my e-mail. When I tried to set up the e-mail settings it would not let me. When I spoke to 3 they said that facility is not available yet as they only just have the IPhones. I am with TALKTALK run by AOL. Does that infor sound right?

Well it could be right, they would need to allow push e-mails on their service, which looking at their site they don't have blackberry listed as a handset offering (i might be wrong on this, i'm an o2 customer), so they might not have it setup, which is what they say.

You could use gmail, as i believe there's a gmail app, and as it tends to use wi-fi/your 3g connection, that should work.

Again this all an assumption, I don't have an iphone yet (waiting for the new shiny version) and i'm an o2 customer, not a 3 one, so take all of this with a pinch of salt :D

I just set up my hotmail account. But all the emails show as unopened even though I did open them on my PC? How do I sync so both my PC and my phone show the same things? Without having to connect it to computer all the time?
  • Hi. Following advice on here, I phoned o2 (although upgrades, haven't spoken to 'disconnections' yet. They suggested I get the 16 GB Iphone (for 'tis an Iphone I want) free (refurbed) but a 24 month contract for £35 a month. Ideally I want a 12 month contract and if at all possible, less than £35 a month although that bit does sound reasonable. From people's experience, will I get further by going to disconnections? I feel my negotiating power is knocked by the fact that the Tesco deal involves paying £200 for the handset so not sure I can quote a better deal at them. Please advise, people... Thanks in advance! You'll need to speak to disconnections for the better deal.

If your not overly fussed about the *new* features coming then by all means try and get a better deal on that 16GB iphone (it'll probably be the 3g, not the 3gs). If you do want the features, you'll be wanting the refurb. 3GS (which o2 don't have in stock). You won't get a 12 month contract from o2 on the iphone, the minimum is 18 months.

If you want to try and haggle, you could provide o2 with the cost of the whole contract. The tesco mobile one still works out cheaper than the o2 package, and that includes a NEW phone, not a refurb.

  • Thanks! Am probably being really thick though but how does it work out to be cheaper? If it's £1040 for 24 months including the cost of the phone with Tescos and £840 for 24 months with o2 it looks like o2 are cheaper. Is that because it's not the equivalent handset?? Thanks again.
