    I'm happy :)

No not brand new REFURBISHED is the phrase your'e looking for

Its not available brand new for free otherwise everybody would be having that deal

An 18 month contract on a 16gb at £35 a month usually means the phone is about £180 so a 32gb would be even more so if you got it free it must be refurbished

Oh come off it. Every competitor device uses flash memory in MicroSD format. You can have unlimited memory simply buy more cards. What are they fitting in the iPhone if not flash - old fashioned micro drives?

Had Apple chosen to, they could have built the iPhone so that you can change the battery and add more memory. Locking both things in the case ensures that they can charge you more. Its a marketing scam!

My point was that Apple does not make £70 extra profit from the 32GB iPhone as you originally stated. The profit margin is reportedly the same on both the 16GB and 32GB.

They do not use SD memory in iPhones - they use NAND flash - which costs more than an SD card. Therefore it's not right to compare what memory is in the iPhone to what they could've done and assume they must make extra profit. I don't know Apple's reason to not use removable memory - perhaps it's performance related. Perhaps it is to make extra profit - however, the fact remains that the increased cost of the 32GB compared to the 16GB appears to be justified.

As with most memory, the higher capacity memory has dis-proportionately higher prices. Also, memory prices have actually started to rise recently according to the FT.
  • I was told that all refurbished phones are those that have been returned in the 14 day returns policy and that they are all sent back to apple for refurbishment.

I was offered a 16gb 3gs on an 18 month contract for £35pm, but to call back in a few days as they were currently out of stock. Upon calling back, i was told that there is no way they could meet that price and as i did not take up the offer they could not honour the offer. After 20 minutes or so of "discussion" he informed me i could have a refurbished 16gb 3gs on an 18 month contract for £35pm. I am therefor assuming that some of their retentions team may be sending out refurbished phones leading you to believe as new? (there again i'm sure he may have informed me it wasn't new should they have been in stock) Though as i was assured all refurbished phones are from the 14 day returns policy, in theory they are all no more than 14 days old and therefore maybe not such a bad deal considering the savings?

    I was then offered a refurbished 32gb 3gs for £96 on a £35 24 month contract...

In the end (perhaps to finally get rid of me) i was offered (free & new) 32gb 3gs for £35 for 24 months Or £45 on a 18month contract...(which i can change after 9 months)

I went for the later option.

Re the "refurbished" handsets, the 16gb 3gs were again out of stock, but they did have stocks of the 32g, so may be worth asking about these.

Can anyone confirm if it's possible to buy an iphone on tesco mobile PAYG, and put an 02 simplicity SIM into it?

  • Hi all, i'm fairly new to posting on here, so go easy on me!... I have been out of contract with my O2 iPhone for a while, and its still good to use, so I got it unlocked moved over to Talkmobile (runs on the Vodafone network) which I purchased at Carphone Warehouse.

Their £15 SIM only 'Talkmobile Talker' gives me 300 mins, 300 texts, and Unlimited data. So is great for my iPhone needs. My sister has hers on the £10 Talkmobile talker tariff, which has 100 mins and 100 texts plus unlimited data. Both only have a 30 day contract, so can bail out easilly should something better come along!

Had no issues with the network, so think this is by far the cheapest way to run an iPhone that is not in contract!

Let me know if you know of any others.

    Tom

Well I'm happy as I got a 'reboxed' with the same guarantee as a new one, 16GB with 600 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £29 per month (no charge for phone) 18mth plan. I'm sure if I had the patience and mathematical brain I could have got it cheaper but I'm very happy with the deal.

Helped I guess that I am a long standing customer of 02 (check deals and push them hard for the best deal every end of contract) and I went to the point of asking for my PAC code to transfer to Orange.

I'd be happy with that come my renewal date. I'm only a new customer with o2 though but I'll quote what you got :)
  • lol - respect! I don't think I am saying iPhones are rubbish - they have put a rocket up the bum of the mobile industry. Not for me as I want a physical keyboard anyway, I was just curious as to why people seem enthusiastic to pay vast sums for them when the benefits of say the higher memory ones are a fraction of what you pay.

For example, O2 do them SIM free. The 32GB one is £100 more than the 16GB one. But a 16GB MicroSD card as used in absolutely every other smartphone is £30 at most. Kerching £70 for nothing to Apple. I totally get the "we like it" attitude - as someone wedded to WinMo I'm hardly one to talk. I just don't get why people let Apple fleece them. People don't generally like getting fleeced, so why do they let Apple keep doing it? Is it the fashion appeal of the white earbuds?

I must admit, I did agree with you, but after my wife bought me an ipod Touch for Christmas I can see the attraction. Once you get your hands on it and play with it, it is so much better than anything else I have used. WinMo has the edge on paper, but when it is in your hands... You have to try it to know. The phone should be even better, as you can access all the apps anywhere, whereas I am tied to wifi locations.

How did you get £29 per month as the rate?

  • Can I save money by running an Iphone on a normal monthly contract? I signed up for a normal Orange 2 year contract a couple of months ago (£20 per month for loads of minutes, loads of texts, broadband, and 'unlimited' data), and would like to buy an Orange Iphone, and insert my SIM. Will this work?
