Further to my earlier post about Bugbusters.
My local pharmacy - part of the Jardine's chain
has just started selling BugBusting kits for 7.95
Includes:
1 detangling comb
1 small & 1 large de-lousing combs (for the live ones !)
1 small & 1 large de-nitting combs (for the eggs)
1 white plastic apron
1 info & 'how to' booklet
The small combs are for toddlers etc, the larger for older children and adults.
The de-nitting combs have teeth with much narrower gaps than normal nit combs to snag the smaller eggs.
All combs are plastic.
I recommend this kit - it proved very successful at my daughters infant school.
I prefer the conditioner/combing method to chemical shampoos0 -
will have a look for that. thanks.0

After being discouraged from using any lotions - maybe with carciongens? found the only way that worked for my kids was putting olive oil on hair for 10 mins, then combing through. (Great conditioner too). Lots of eggs and live-uns come off. I use a nit comb and have a wet cloth to wipe after each few combs, and another wet cloth to put on the eggs/egg cases. I use a cocktail stick to make sure they are picked off the comb - otherwise you just end up combing it back into the hair. Now I'm scaring myself - Am I mad or do I just like my kids heads not to crawl. Then going through hair in natural daylight as can see the eggs better and pulling/dragging them out between finger and thumb. My head is now itching aaaarrrrgghhhh and I've not even got nits.
Also tried tea-tree oil - bunged a whole lot in a bottle of conditioner - made it smell real bad and never seemed to work. Not tried mayonaisse. Hopefully kids are never gonna get them again and I'm gonna win the lottery on Saturday - ha ha. My glass is half-full. Gone to fill up. xx0 -
I use athingytail stick ??? ???
What I put was a c0cktail stick. Didn't know that was rude.

nits drive me mad too. I check my kids regulary ,if only everyone else did at their school (theres only 35) then I wouldn't keep finding them and spend hours combing. I think a lot of parents have resigned to the conclusion that they're just part of childhood.
My partner treated himself with the cats flea spray, as it contained the same active ingredients ,but much cheaper.does anyone know if this is safe? worked anyway.
Why dont they give nit shampoo away direct from the school? save the doctors time / our money.0 -
After being discouraged from using any lotions - maybe with carciongens?
Just for information, I work in a lab where among other things we test for pesticides including Malathion, Permethrin, Phenothrin and Carbaryl all of which are used in the main nit lotions prescribed for used in the UK. These all can have cancer causing / immune suppressing / or irritant symptoms.
I assume they're in a lower concentration in the lotions, but when we have to deal with these chemicals in the lab we have to wear gloves, glasses and a full breathing mask (not just a paper mask). I wouldn't be too keen on using them on myself or my kids (if I had any!)
My mum's a primary school teacher and she swears by the nit zapping comb.0 -

And the shampoos and lotions are not the whole solution: the nits do become immune, if they're overused. Do we want supernits? I think not!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

well kids have been back at school now for a few weeks and after spending the first part of the summer holidays ridding mine of the little blighters. My youngest whos just started reception class this year has come home with a head full >:( and with 2 other girls with hair down to their backsides not much fun at the moment, i've shaved my sons head again, give the poor sod a no2 and sent him off to school with a hat, he said his ears were cold, soft sod lol.
anyway after spending most of the past 2 evenings wet combing the girls hair i think i've made a big difference, apart from tying their hair up into a 40s bun, not sure what i can do now to prevent them getting them again and spending next half term (just a week away) from going through the whole process again, lotion, wet combing......................aaarrrrgggg.. this drives me mad
sorry moan over :-XNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission
Love doesn't make the world go round, it's what makes the ride worthwhile
